Man fails to save pooch after devastating Bulldog attack

A couple were left distraught after their Yorkshire Terrier was savagely killed in the street by another dog.

Pensioner Nick Phillipowsky, 66, and his partner Trish were left devastated after their pet pooch Bella was suddenly attacked by an American Bulldog.

Police are investigating the incident which took place at Birds Avenue, Garlinge, near Margate, Kent on June 6 at 1.25pm.

Mr Phillipowsky attempted to wrestle the beast on the ground as he desperately tried to protect his dog. Onlookers also tried to get the American Bulldog off defenceless Bella.

However Bella was killed and the 66-year-old suffered serious injuries to his hand requiring emergency surgery with the horror moment being captured on a neighbour’s CCTV.

Neighbours rushed to try and help by whacking the attacking dog on the back but were unsuccessful 

Mr Phillipowsky could be seen grappling with the white American Bulldog for nearly three minutes. Neighbours rushed to try and help by whacking the attacking dog on the back but were unsuccessful.

The pensioner said: ‘My finger was hanging on by a piece of skin,

‘It’s all a bit of a blur, but it went on for a few minutes with me grappling with the bulldog.

‘I was just trying to save Bella, but the force and strength of the dog was too much for me.

‘I was overpowered and I knew Bella was dead.’

The couple’s other dog Woody was also injured, but is now recovering after being treated by a vet.

Mr Phillipowsky added: ‘I don’t want to see the dog destroyed, but laws have to be changed to stop this sort of attack happening again.

‘It could have been a child seriously mauled.’ 

A Kent Police spokesperson said: ‘We were called following a report that a dog was attacking other dogs.

‘Officers attended and the dog was seized.

‘Two people were injured during the incident and a man was taken to a local hospital.

‘Two dogs were also injured, with one sadly found deceased at the scene and another taken to a vets.

‘Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.’
