‘You shook my husband’s hand for a photo op’: Matt Hancock is confronted by widow of Covid victim as he arrives to give evidence to pandemic inquiry
- Matt Hancock is the latest politician to be grilled at the official Covid Inquiry
Matt Hancock was confronted by the widow of a Covid victim today as he arrived to give evidence to the official inquiry.
The former health secretary was met by a protester brandishing images of her husband who died in a care home.
Lorelei King, 69, held up two A4 posters for Mr Hancock to see as he got out of a black Jaguar 4×4 and entered the building in central London.
One featured an image of Mr Hancock with Ms King’s husband, Vincent Marzello, who died in a care home in March 2020 at the age of 72.
The poster was captioned: ‘You shook my husband’s hand for your photo op.’
The other poster featured an image of her husband’s coffin, with the caption: ‘This was my photo op after your ‘ring of protection’ around care homes.’

Six members of the group Covid Families for Justice waited outside for Mr Hancock’s arrival.
This stage of the inquiry is looking at pandemic preparations.
Previous witnesses have already admitted that ‘group think’ in Whitehall meant that there was little consideration given to an outbreak that was not a type of flu.
It was reported in March 2020 that actor Marzello had died aged 68.
The Brooklyn native had worked steadily since the 1970s, appearing in two James Bond movies – The Spy Who Loved Me and Never Say Never Again – as well as Superman and, more recently, Planet 51.
He appeared on the British TV shows Little Britain, Dalziel And Pascoe and Mile High.
Marzello had been suffering from early-onset dementia since 2009, with the brain condition diagnosed just after he had beaten cancer.
