A furious debate has been sparked on Twitter over who is in the right after Jeremy Vine shared footage of when he was nearly hit by a bus while cycling.

The BBC Radio 2 host can be heard shouting ‘woah’ as a red double-decker bus overtook him on his right-hand side while he cycled in the middle of a bus lane.

The cycle campaigner’s video sparked a heated debate online after he posted the 53-second clip to his 790,000 followers on Twitter.

The footage was viewed more than 2.2 million times and more than 2,000 social media users have commented to debate whether Mr Vine was in the wrong.

One user wrote: ‘Wow. Inch closer and that would be a clean shave. Absolutely irresponsible by the driver and unnecessary. Once on the bike  you always catch bus on the next stop.’

Another disagreed, tweeting: ‘You look twice in your mirror to see the bus coming, you having plenty of room to ride to the left of the bus lane and yet choose to stand your ground.

‘You’re looking for trouble quite a bit when you ride, in the knowledge you’re going to upload the footage.’

While another who claimed to be a bus driver said it is ‘all common sense’.

They tweeted: ‘I’m a bus driver and a cyclist and yes he came too close but yes despite the Highway Code one has to think of self preservation and I would be keeping to the left as much as I could, its all common sense… whatever happened to that these days?’

The 57-year-old was heading east on Theobalds road this morning at 6.20am.

The footage then showed the bus had stopped later down the road and Vine asked the driver ‘What’s going on?’ but there was no response.

The incident involved a bus on route 243 travelling on Theobalds Road, Holborn.

The near miss comes just days after Mr Vine shared other footage of his ‘first collision of the year’ while cycling in London.

He said the crash was caused by a woman on a bike going through a red light at a crossing, which led to him swerving into a cyclist next to him.

But despite the low-speed bump being caused by another biker Mr Vine still took an opportunity to slam motorists who ‘would have had a fist fight in the same situation’.
