Moment man fends off a 'shark' with a mop but it was actually harmless fish

Most people who see a shark would take one look and leg it as fast as they can.

But one brave swimmer actually confronted the suspected animal armed only with a mop at a beach in Turkey.

He bonked it on the head a few times much to the amusement of the man filming who laughs away.

It all happened at the tourist destination of Marmaris as the big fish was filmed swimming towards a beach full of kids.

Tourists standing in the shallow water soon saw the ominous dark fin circling around them, while people on the beach pointed in horror.

The fish eventually swam off after its painful encounter, while some swimmers stayed put to make sure it had left.

But there’s a twist in the tale – Turkish officials have now confirmed it was not even a shark.

They said: ‘The fish seen on the public beach and thought to be a shark was a Mediterranean Garfish.

‘According to experts, it is a harmless animal. That’s why you don’t need to take a mop with you when you go into the sea.’

While it wasn’t a shark on this occasion, the Mediterranean is home to 47 shark species, including the Great White, hammerhead and blue shark.

It comes after two women were killed in two separate shark attacks within 600 metres of each other in Egypt.

Authorities closed off several beaches on the Red Sea coast by Hurghada – a popular holiday destination for Brits.

The firs victim was named as 68-year-old Elisabeth Sauer from Austria who died after the shark ripped her arm and leg off.

She told her husband she was just going in the sea ‘for a moment’ before she was attacked.

The second victim was reportedly a Romanian tourist, but has not yet been identified.
