Pensioner, 76, dies and two children are rushed to hospital after car collides with fans outside Scottish football match

A pensioner has died and two children were rushed to hospital after a car collided with fans outside a Scottish football match. 

The incident happened outside Queen of the South FC’s Palmerston Park in Dumfries last night. 

The pensioner, 76, is believed to have been driving a Vauxhall Crossland when he became ill at the wheel. 

His vehicle then hit three pedestrians – including two 12-year-old boys – as well as two parked cars. 

Police, emergency workers and first aid volunteers attended the scene as stadium staff and visitors also offered their assistance to the victims.

The pensioner was tragically pronounced dead at the scene, while a 46-year-old man and the two boys were taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. They were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to medics. 

A witness told the Scottish Sun: ‘I heard screams of help and police just after it happened.

‘It’s understood a car may have run out of control and hit some people before hitting another vehicle.’ 

Queen of the South released a statement online which said: ‘Everyone at the club is devastated with respect to the incident that took place in the Arena car park immediately following the end of today’s match with Dundee United. 

‘Our thoughts are very much with those involved. 

‘We would like to thank everyone who helped, including the emergency services, stewards, personnel from both clubs and those supporters who stepped up to help. Thank you all.’

The statement added: ‘Situations like this certainly put football into perspective.’  

A Police Scotland spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We were made aware of a collision between a car, three pedestrians and two parked cars in a car park at Lochfield Road in Dumfries shortly after 5.50pm on Saturday, 25 November.

‘The 76-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall Crossland car involved was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin are aware.

‘The three pedestrians – a man aged 46 and two boys both aged 12, were taken to Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.

‘A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.’ 

They added: ‘Officers wish to thank all members of the public for their assistance at the incident.’
