The sickening alleged daylight robbery of a pregnant mother walking with her two children in suburban Perth has “shocked” West Australian Police Commissioner Col Blanch.
A 15-year-old girl was charged with robbery on Monday after she allegedly pulled a mother to the ground and attempted to steal her handbag while out walking in the north-eastern suburb of Ashfield with her two children in a pram.
About 12.40pm, the 37-year-old mother was walking on Smallman Place with her two children in a pram, when police allege the teenager approached the victim and assaulted her while attempting to steal her handbag.
Shocking CCTV footage of the incident shows the teenager pulling the woman to the ground from behind by her hair, upturning the pram with the two children in it in the process.
Blanch said he was “absolutely shocked” by the video but praised the mother for not letting go of the pram.
“This is a mother walking with her two young kids dragged by the hair and assaulted in broad daylight,” he said.
“The thing that really resonated with me was the fact that she hung on to that pram.
“She hung on to that pram for dear life and if that doesn’t demonstrate what a mother is prepared to do to protect her kids, I don’t know what does.”
The teenager was arrested a short time later at a nearby address and was charged with robbery.
She will appear in Geraldton Magistrates Court on September 13.
Midland detectives were appealing for information and released the CCTV footage to figure out the movements of the teenager and a friend before and after the incident.
