A petition demanding the Welsh government reverse its ‘disastrous’ 20mph speed limit has brought in more than 260,000 signatures – equal to eight per cent of the country’s population.

The new law, which came into force on September 17, was introduced by the Labour run government which claims the £32million rollout of 20mph limits will save lives and cut NHS costs by £92million a year.

But furious residents in Wales have demanded the move be reversed, saying the government’s claim that it will save lives lacks evidence and it will make ‘no difference’ to road traffic collisions (RTCs).

The petition, which will keep collecting signatures until March 13, 2024, has so far received a record-breaking figure of more than 262,000. It is now believed to be the most signed in Senedd history.

The number stood at 200,000 at around 6pm last night, meaning supporters are rising significantly as more motorists revolt against the move.

Just two days ago the number of signatures stood at 80,000, with 40 people apparently signing every minute.

Angry motorists have taken to Twitter today to slam the new law and support the petition, with one writing: ‘Anyone have a link to the petition to abolish this crazy 20mph limit in Wales?’

Another wrote: ‘Does anyone else in Wales get anxiety when straying slightly over the 20mh speed limit? Surely we can have a more specific and targeted 20mph limit for dangerous areas rather than a blanket coverage?

‘It’s so miserable in Wales right now!’

The 20mph speed limit was branded an ‘absolute nightmare’ by furious drivers, with signs vandalised with spray paint and cars travelling at 20mph in a 40mph zone.

The scheme has recently been blasted as ‘insane’ by leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt, who said the Welsh Government has ‘ignored businesses’ and ‘ignored the public’. She claims the scheme is ‘punishing’ drivers.

The scheme, which meant altering 30,000 road signs at a cost of £32million, has been described as ‘anti-worker, anti-road and anti-motorist’ by Welsh conservatives who have vowed to repeal it.

Earlier this week a top driver instructor warned that the new limit would cause ‘confusion, chaos, gridlock and mayhem’ on the country’s roads.

Stuart Walker, who has been training drivers since 1987, warned of widespread anger over Wales’ decision to cut the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph.

He said: ‘Angry drivers do not make safe drivers.

‘If we go up a steep hill and we can only approach at 20mph the gear box is going to change gear up and down, up and down, and we are going to lose a lot of speed and we’re going to cause chaos, confusion, gridlock and mayhem.’

He added that the Welsh government’s plans also lack public support, as he argued the new rules need to be seen as ‘justified’ to be effective.

‘The 20mph speed limit now has been devalued. It’s got to be seen as justified for it to work effectively,’ Mr Walker added.

The driving instructor said he fully supports lower speed limits outside Welsh schools but said he does not believe every 30mph zone should now have a speed limit of 20mph.
