Prisoners are complaining their tuck shop sells only cakes – after fruit and vegetables were removed as they are used to make alcohol.
Many jails have limited supplies of ‘fermentable food products’ such as fruit, vegetables and Marmite, hoping to stop inmates using them to brew moonshine.
But inmates at Isle of Man Prison have complained to the governor that cakes are the only things left on sale.
A recent report by Charlie Taylor, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, found the tuck shop stocked almost exclusively sweet items, including cakes, flapjacks and doughnuts.
Other items such as tinned and fresh fruits, raisins, nuts and jars of Marmite were removed from sale due to ‘security concerns’.

But a prison source said many inmates are increasingly choosing a healthier lifestyle
A common way to make alcohol in prison is to mix fruit with sugar and bread and leave it somewhere warm for a few days.
The resulting illicit hooch is often shared with cellmates or sold to other inmates.
But a prison source said many inmates are increasingly choosing a healthier lifestyle.
He said: ‘Prison food is no great shakes at the best of times.
Prisoners want and need access to healthy foods.’
