Road workers spell 'school' incorrectly outside Swansea primary

Red faces as road workers spell ‘school’ incorrectly in BOTH English and Welsh outside a Swansea primary

  • Workers employed by Wales & West Utilities painted ‘shcool’ outside a primary
  • Welsh word for school has also been spelled wrong in past but unclear who by
  • Company joked they were confident of getting full marks when fixed tomorrow

Road workers in Wales have been left red-faced after photographs surfaced online of two spelling blunders in both English and Welsh outside a primary school of all places.

Gas workers employed by Wales & West Utilities were responsible for the unfortunate misspelling of ‘school’ outside Llangyfelach Primary in Swansea.

The contractors repainting the road outside the Welsh primary somehow mistakenly painted ‘shcool’ instead of ‘school’.

To make matters worse, the Welsh translation for school is also spelled incorrectly – with ‘ysool’ painted on the road instead of ‘ysgol’.

It’s unclear who was responsible for the Welsh mistake as the yellow painting is clearly faded, suggesting it has been there a lot longer.

Wales & West Utilities told MailOnline they are ‘confident the teachers will give them full marks’ when the team return tomorrow morning to salvage their error.

Phil Whittier, Wales & West Utilities Programme Controller for Swansea, explained that contractors had been working in the area to upgrade the gas network.

He added: ‘We completed our work today and replaced the road outside Llangyfelach Primary School where we had been digging.

‘Contractors working on our behalf then replaced the road markings where we had been working and, unfortunately, have misspelt the word ‘school’.’

‘The team are returning tomorrow morning to replace the markings with the correct letters and we are confident the teachers will give them full marks this time.’

Swansea Council were quick to distance themselves from the blunder with leader Rob Stewart sharing a photograph of the slip-up and attributing it to Wales & West Utilities.

‘I know this one is already doing the rounds on social media,’ he said.

‘Thankfully not one of ours. It’s NOT Swansea Council. Apparently Wales & West Utilities have been working there recently and will return to rectify it.

‘Red faces all round at WWU I expect.’

Swansea Council were quick to distance themselves from the blunder, while others couldn’t help but see the funny side

Social media users were quick to point out the mistake, with one suggesting the WWU should go back to school themselves.

Another, seemingly deliberately misspelling rectified, joked: ‘I hope its rectumfied (sic) quickly.’

A third added: ‘Got to see the funny side’.

Meanwhile another pointed out: ‘The Welsh version spelt incorrectly also’.

Swansea Council have been approached for comment about the incorrect spelling of ‘ysgol’.
