‘Sadistic’ thugs who tortured a naked man for 12 hours – including throwing darts at him, carving a name into his head with a Stanley knife and pulling out his teeth – in depraved ‘Tarantino-esque’ revenge attack are jailed
- Wayne Butler and Stephen Dixon carried out the attack on Matthew Williams
A pair of ‘sadistic’ thugs who tortured a naked man for 12 hours in scenes compared to those found in an ultra-violent Quentin Tarantino film have been jailed.
Wayne Butler, 37, and Stephen Dixon, 51, inflicted a series of barbaric injuries on Matthew ‘Jimmy’ Williams in a bid to extort money from his family – throwing darts at him and carving a woman’s name into his forehead with a Stanley knife.
Butler pulled out four of Mr Williams’ teeth with a door hinge, sprayed him with corrosive ammonia, choked him with a metal bar and placed a plastic bag over his head after finding the victim stood over his girlfriend, who had overdosed on drugs.
Both men then sent ‘horror’ photos of the victim to his brother in a bid to get money. Prosecutors compared the scenes to a Tarantino film – the director is infamous for depicting excessive graphic violence in his films.
Prosecutor John Wyn Williams told Mold Crown Court of the attack in Valentine Court, Great Oak Street, Llanidloes: ‘It was like something out of a Tarantino horror film.’

Co-defendant Stephen Dixon was jailed for six years after admitting the same charge
The victim was saved when police swooped – and he believed he would have been killed or be found ‘dead in a river’ if he revealed who tortured him.
The court heard that Butler found Mr Williams stood over Butler’s girlfriend, who had suffered a drug overdose, in the bathroom of Dixon’s flat at about 3.30am.
Butler blamed Mr Williams for the overdose and for possibly taking advantage of the woman, then held a plastic bag over his head and tried to suffocate him before both men threw darts at their victim.
Butler used a knife to carve the woman’s name into Mr Williams’ head, then took a door hinge and used it to pull out four teeth before trying to choke him with the metal bar. During the ordeal, Mr Williams was stripped and tied up with bandages.
The pair demanded £400 and sent photos of their torture victim to his brother Gary, demanding that the money be transferred.
They continued making threats to their captive: Butler said he would kneecap Mr Williams, while Dixon threatened to hit him with a brandy bottle. A sock was stuffed in his mouth to stop him ‘shouting or screaming’.
Police received a call from someone who could see the man being held against his will; officers found him naked and injured in the flats.
In a victim statement, Mr Williams said he has nightmares and can no longer eat hard food or bite apples and pears. He also said the photos looked like ‘something from a horror film’.
Oliver King, defending Butler, said his client is remorseful, adding that he has ADHD, psychosis, PTSD, depression and anxiety. Mr King added that Butler lost a sister after a heroin overdose that saw her put into a coma for two years.
Butler, 37, of Ruabon, North Wales, and Dixon, of Llanidloes, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and false imprisonment in Llanidloes on July 17.
Judge Rhys Rowlands jailed Butler for ten and a half years and Dixon for six years.
He told the pair they used sadistic violence against a vulnerable victim and had shown ‘unbelievable cruelty’.
One of Tarantino’s films, Reservoir Dogs, is known for a notorious torture scene in which the sadistic Mr Blonde, played by Michael Madsen, tortures a policeman while listening to Stealers Wheel hit Stuck in the Middle With You.
