Six killed in Spanish nightclub fire, with several missing

At least six people killed in horrific fire in Spanish nightclub, with several missing as fears grow death toll is set to rise

At least six people have died during a nightclub fire in Spain, while another eight people are missing. 

The fire broke out in the nightclub, located in the Atalaya area of Murcia, south-east Spain, in the early hours of Sunday morning, and is believed to have spread to nearby buildings. 

It has been named locally as the Teatre nightclub, also known as Fonda Milagros. 

Roughly 40 firefighters in 12 fire engines attended the scene shortly after reports came in at around 6am local time. 

Murcia’s emergency services said that they managed to enter the building four hours later, and found four bodies, before finding another two 40 minutes later.

There are still eight people missing, who were all celebrating a birthday in the nightclub

Emergency services said that four people had been injured and that the number of fatalities could rise. 

The four injured people were made up of two women and two men, between the ages of 22 and 45. 

It is understood that the eight missing people were part of a group celebrating a birthday in the well-known nightclub. 

It is believed there could be more victims, with reports firefighters are looking for people reported as missing who are thought to have been in the nightclub at the time. 

It is not currently known what caused the fire, which broke out while the nightclub was still busy. 

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the fire began on the first floor of the nightclub.  

Murcia Police’s Homicide Group have joined the investigation into the cause of the fire.

Eight people, all believed to be celebrating a birthday at the club, are still missing 

A team of psychologists, social workers, ten Civil Protection workers and two Local Police officers are on hand at the city’s sports arena, the Murcia Sports Palace, and a special room has been set up for the most serious cases that require psychological attention. 

This isn’t the first time a fire has broken out at the Teatre nightclub. 

Spanish newspaper La Razon reported that 50 people were evacuated from the building in 2009 after cables on the façade of the building caught fire. 

While the 2009 blaze did not cause any injuries or claim any lived, smoke reportedly seeped into the nightclub.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire in about 30 minutes.
