The news that three UFOs have been shot down over US and Canadian airspace in the past three days has set the Internet alight, with social media’s best meme-makers conspiring to publish a flood of satirical images.

UFOs, or ‘unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs)’ as they are called by the US government, have been a topic of fascination and mystery for decades.

From alleged government cover-ups to sightings of mysterious lights in the sky – not to mention the potential for alien life – there are plenty of reasons why the phenomenon is embedded in popular culture.

Skeptics have long argued that the evidence for UFOs is scarce and that most sightings are just the product of word of mouth and no hard facts.

But in recent years, several credible sources – including US air force and navy fighter pilots – have opened up about their experiences with UFOs and shared footage of their near misses, lending more credence to the increasingly frequent sightings of unidentified craft.

Now, US defense officials have admitted that they were forced to dispatch F-22 and F-16 jet fighters to shoot down three UFOs in as many days over Alaska, Canada and the Great Lakes in Michigan.

And this comes just one week after a suspected Chinese spy balloon was shot down over South Carolina.

Here, DailyMail.com rounds up the best of the Internet’s takes on the latest UFO saga.
