Tattoo artist daughter, 9, practice her own inking skills on her body

Tattoo artist reveals she lets her nine-year-old daughter practice her own inking skills on her body – and says her three designs are ‘awesome’

  • Tattoo artist Christine Fleming, 33, offered up her ankle as a canvas for her nine-year-old daughter, Scarlett, to practice her tattooing talents on
  • Scarlett has since tattooed a heart, a cherry blossom, and a butterfly on her mother’s ankle, all three of which she designer herself
  • Christine said Scarlett is not allowed to get her own tattoo until she turns 18

A tattoo artist lets her nine-year-old daughter practice her own budding talents in the art on her, and says it has gone ‘surprisingly well.’

Christine Fleming, 33, has given over her ankle and leg to let her daughter, Scarlett, tattoo a red flower and a colorful butterfly.

Though Scarlett is still an amateur, Christine told South West News Service she isn’t bothered by any imperfections, saying ‘I’m not too worried about it being perfect or anything.’

Her lack of fears were well-founded, as Scarlett seemed to have inherited her mother’s talents. In videos posted to Christine’s TikTok, both of Scarlett’s tattoos appeared to be perfectly executed.

Christine said she guided her daughter through both processes, and that Scarlett followed her directions perfectly.

‘She’s really good at following instruction and I guide her through,’ she said, pointing out that so far she’s kept her daughter’s designs simple.

In addition to the butterfly and the heart – both of which Scarlett designed – she’s inked a simple heart on her mother’s ankle.

The mother and daughter first got the idea after Scarlett expressed interested, and Christine saw other artists letting their children practice on the.

‘I had seen some other parents letting their kids tattoo them,’ Christine said. ‘I was like – ‘that might be fun.”

Before inking her mother, Scarlett first honed her skills on imitation skin used for tattoo practice. Christine described as ‘leathery’ and ‘less forgiving’ than the real thing, and said Scarlett didn’t like it and quickly moved on to her mother for practice.

After the heart, she designed and tattooed the butterfly last December, and then in March designed and inked the flower. The flower – a cherry blossom – took about an hour to complete.

Christine said Scarlett will not be allowed to get her own tattoos until she turns 18 years old

Christine said she isn’t going to pressure her daughter into following her into the business, and that for now she’s just pleased by how the process has been helping her.

‘She’s really proud of herself,’ Christine said. ‘She’s got a confidence boost.’

She said that though it would be ‘cool’ if she took up the art full time one day, ‘I’m not going to pressure her to keep doing it.’

‘But it’s a different skill she’ll have,’ she said.

Christine said though her daughter’s work was ‘awesome,’ she won’t be allowed to get her own tattoos until she turns 18.
