Terrifying moment landing gear SNAPS OFF US-bound plane after it is forced to turn back and carry out emergency landing in Luxembourg

  • The Boeing 747 was bound for Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Sunday
  • Cargolux plane was forced to turn back when its landing gear failed to retract

This is the terrifying moment landing gear snapped off a plane bound for the United States after it was forced to turn back and carry out an emergency landing.

The Boeing 747 was bound for Chicago O’Hare International Airport, but had to return to the Luxembourg Airport runway when its landing gear failed to retract.

Cargolux, the company that operates the plane, described it as a ‘significant landing incident’ in a statement, saying the plane also had to dump fuel.

The Luxembourgian company added that the aircraft was able to come to a complete stop, and that no one was injured in the Sunday evening incident.

Dramatic footage shows the plane touching down on the tarmac, with the heavy landing causing one of its wheel bogeys to detach and bounce into the air.

The video shows the plane coming in to land before its rear wheels hit the tarmac, causing smoke to billow out from the friction.

At this point, one set of four wheels is seen tearing off and flying into the air behind it as it barrels down the tarmac.

Smoke continues to streak out from under the wheels as a fire engine springs into action, driving past the camera en-route to the runway.

The camera pans away from the plane and follows the detached wheel bogeys as it spins at speed, bouncing off the tarmac and high into the air.

Pictures of the aftermath show a gaping hole in the plane’s undercarriage, as well as a second large dent where it appears the wheels had bounced up and into.

The damaged landing mechanism is seen under the aircraft, with mangled pieces of metal and loose wires seen jetting off where the wheels had been.

Away from the plane, the four wheels lay on the grass adjacent to the runway.

In a statement, the airline said: ‘Cargolux would like to confirm that one of its aircraft, B747-400F bearing registration mark LX-OCV, suffered a significant landing incident at Luxembourg airport on Sunday evening at 18:52.

‘The aircraft was unable to retract its landing gear on take-off from Luxembourg. As a result, it was forced to safely dump fuel in order to return to land at the airport. On its landing role its right body landing gear detached from the aircraft.

The aircraft however came to a controlled stop and was attended to by the emergency services. ‘No persons on board nor on the ground suffered any injuries. The relevant authorities have been informed of the incident.

‘The aircraft remains on the runway and recovery efforts are underway,’ it added.
