A third giant shark has been spotted swimming off the Spanish coastline near to a popular British tourist destination in less than a week.

A group of fishermen in Majorca captured the moment the shark approached their boat in the calm waters of Cap de Formentor, near Puerto Pollensa.

As it got closer to the boat, the men realised it was a grey, six-gilled flat-toothed reef shark, known as cow sharks and turned the boat engine off to avoid hurting the creature.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin said the appearance was ‘very unusual’ as the harmless species usually lives at the bottom of the sea and does not tend to surface.

This is the third shark incident off the Spanish coast in a week, last Thursday beachgoers ran to safety as a shark edged towards the shoreline on Aguamarina Beach, South Alicante.

At around 10am, lifeguards blew their whistles to warn locals and tourists to get out of the sea as soon as possible.

The morning afterward footage emerged of what was thought to be a blue shark, lurking in the water at the port of Ciutadella de Menorca.

While shark encounters are rare at resort towns in Spain, a few incidents have been witnessed over recent years.

Back in 2016, a blue shark was blamed for attacking a tourist further down the coast in Elche, near Alicante.

The 40-year-old victim was rushed to hospital after being bitten and required stitches for his hand.

First aiders described the bite as ‘large’ and said he had come out of the sea covered in blood.

An incident in 2018 saw tourists running out of the water in panic after a blue shark emerged off the packed Majorcan beach of Calas de Majorca.

The recent shark sightings comes after a tiger shark killed a 23-year-old Russian tourist in Egypt earlier this month.

Vladimir Popov was ripped apart in Hurghada on the shores of the Red Sea and reportedly screamed ‘Papa, papa’ as the shark attacked him in front of horrified beachgoers.

It was confirmed that body parts of the man were recovered from inside the shark’s stomach.

The tiger shark which killed Popov has been embalmed and is being prepared for an exhibition at a museum in Egypt, according to local media.

A marine biologist said the pregnant tiger shark was suspected of having killed twice in 2022.

In July of last year, 68-year-old Austrian tourist Elizabeth Sauer was attacked in the water while snorkeling.

The shark struck a second time just feet away, killing a Romanian tourist.
