Three people killed after van 'driving the wrong way down motorway' crashes into taxi as boy, 15, arrested | The Sun

THREE people have been killed after a van allegedly driving the wrong way down a motorway crashed into a taxi.

A 15-year-old boy has now been arrested on suspicion of causing deaths by dangerous driving after the smash in Bradford overnight.


Officers were called to a serious collision involving a van and taxi at 10.45pm last night on the M606.

Two men, aged 29 and 49, in the taxi were pronounced dead at the scene – since named as passenger Simon McHugh and driver Sohail Ali.

An 18-year-old male passenger in the van died in hospital this morning.

Another passenger, a 17-year-old boy, is in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The teen boy driver is currently in hospital with minor injuries.

The 15-year-old driver has now been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but remains in hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries.

Due to the nature of the incident, West Yorkshire Police has informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The IOPC said initial investigations suggested the van was stolen however it is not believed the police followed the van onto the motorway.

Images from the crash site show the taxi on a tow truck with its front engine compete ripped clean from the car.

Feet away from it is the blue van, which was seriously damaged in the smash.

According to LeedsLive, the van is understood to have been stolen.

The van reportedly crashed head-on with a taxi near to the Chain Bar roundabout between junctions one and three.

The motorway was closed for several hours while police conducted aninvestigation.

Thea Walton, IOPC regional director, said: "This was a tragic incident that has resulted in three people losing their lives. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

"We understand this will have caused considerable concern in the community and I would like to reassure people there will be a thorough, independent investigation to understand exactly what has happened."
