Tragedy as woman, 21, ‘suddenly’ dies at Cardiff nightclub – as venue boss reveals ‘absolute heartbreak’

•  South Wales Police are investigating, while Vaults wrote it was ‘heartbroken’
• Techno DJ and producer Azyr had been playing when the woman was ‘taken ill’ 

A music venue in Cardiff said it was ‘absolutely heartbroken’ after a young woman died at one of its events. 

Vaults in Bute Street released a statement after a 21-year-old woman died after she was taken ill at a techno event early on Saturday morning.

South Wales Police said that the woman’s death was ‘sudden and unexplained’ and added it was investigating the incident, which took place at Vaults underground dance venue where techno DJ and producer Azyr had been playing on Friday night.

In a statement on social media on Sunday, the venue said it was ‘absolutely heartbroken due to the events of Friday night.’ 

It said: ‘During the event, concerns were raised for an individual who was immediately taken to the onsite medic for medical assistance. South Wales Ambulance Service arrived within minutes to the aid of our medic, but tragically the individual passed away despite every effort from the medical staff.’

Vaults is located in the downstairs of Portland House, a historic building in Cardiff

The statement added: ‘We would like to send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual and offer our continued support during this tragic time.’

It also thanked South Wales Police, SEMS Medical Services, Vaults staff and Rubicon security for their ‘incredible efforts’ during the incident and added: ‘Safety is our number one priority as a venue, and we will continue to implement our strict policies through our upcoming events.’

Following the incident, the event scheduled to take place on Saturday night was cancelled. Vaults is located in the basement of Portland House, a historic listed building in Cardiff that regularly hosts events. 

South Wales Police confirmed on Sunday it was continuing its investigation. 

A spokesperson said: ‘Police in Cardiff are continuing to investigate the sudden and unexplained death of a 21-year-old woman who was taken ill at a music event in Butetown in the early hours of Saturday morning.’
