Two people have died and three others were hospitalised after two separate car crashes in Melbourne’s outer suburbs during the early hours of Saturday morning, resulting in one arrest.
In Chirnside Park, about 32 kilometres north-east of the CBD, emergency services responded to reports a car had hit two parked vehicles on Edward Road at about 2am. The car burst into flames after impact, police said.

Paramedics tried to save a male passenger but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other men – the driver of the vehicle and another passenger – were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and are assisting police with their enquiries. The exact circumstances of the crash have not yet been established.
In a separate crash in Beaconsfield, in Melbourne’s outer south-east, a woman died after the car she was a passenger in hit a tree on Old Princes Highway at about 12.15am.

Another passenger travelling in the car was airlifted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 30-year-old Pakenham man who was driving the vehicle was arrested at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries.
