Urgent dog death warning for owners as top vet says pets are at risk – here's how to keep them safe | The Sun

A TOP vet has issued an urgent dog death warning for owners – and what you need to do to keep your pets safe.

Veterinary surgeon Marc Abraham, known to millions of TV viewers, said owners should stop their furry friends from going into the sea.

Marc says that this is because raw sewage is currently rife in certain areas such as Sussex.

The experienced vet says that dogs can contract illnesses such as gastroenteritis by ingesting poisonous seawater directly or from licking their fur after a swim.

Marc told The Argus: “It’s preventable by not letting their dog swim in the sea.

“There have been cases in the news. It can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, and be bloody expensive if they are hospitalised, at around one or two thousand pounds.”

And the consequences could be even worse with Marc stressing that dogs can die from gastroenteritis in some cases.

It comes after 13 areas in Sussex were contaminated with raw sewage last week after storm outlet pipes flowed into the sea.

Marc also warned of blue-green algal bloom in freshwater ponds and lakes due to recent hot weather.

The vet said that algal bloom can also cause pets to become ill.

Earlier this month, an urgent warning was issued after several dogs died after drinking water from a toxic lake in East London.

It comes after another vet gave five crucial tips for pet owners to keep their animals safe this summer.
