What it’s REALLY like inside a cult – and the chilling way they lure people in: Experts tell CAITLYN BECKER how easy it is for ‘any of us’ to get trapped
Whether real or fictionalized, America has a deep rooted fascination with cults, and experts are warning that it’s ‘dangerous’ for people to assume they wouldn’t be susceptible to indoctrination.
This month Max debuted their controversial new series, The Idol, starring The Weeknd as a modern day cult leader and Prime Video premiered a bombshell docuseries about the disgraced reality TV family, the Duggars, and their disturbing religious fundamentalism.
Amidst the moment that cults are having in the cultural zeitgeist, DailyMail.com consulted two world renowned experts to understand how destructive cults function and prey on innocent people.
Cult and destructive mind control expert, author and a former cult member himself, Dr. Steven Hassan, explains that the indoctrination process occurs so slowly that even the most intelligent people don’t realize it’s happening.
‘The public tends to think that only weak and stupid people or uneducated people or people from bad homes or not given religious upbringing get into these groups. But it’s not the case,’ Dr. Hassan told DailyMail.com. Adding: ‘We have moments where we’re going to be more open to strangers.’
‘Any of us, if we’re caught at the right moment could be susceptible,’ cautions cult expert Mike King. King, the author of Deceived, an Investigative Memoir of the Zion Society Cult, is a former cult investigator who has worked on more than 300 cult cases.
Both experts agree that most destructive cults participate in unethical and, often times, illegal activities. They are able to thrive, they say, due to intricate mind control and the absolute authority of the cult leader.
