More voters believe Liz Truss is a better choice as Prime Minister than her Labour rival Sir Keir Starmer, new polling has revealed.
A Redfield & Wilton Strategies survey showed signs that Ms Truss’s entry into Downing Street has given her personal standing with voters – as well as the Tories – a boost in popularity.
Labour’s overall lead is now four points lower, with Sir Keir’s party backed by 42 per cent of voters compared to the Conservatives on 34 per cent.
In the latest poll, the Tories have risen four points since Redfield’s previous survey, which was conducted just a day into Ms Truss’s premiership.
The Government received a net competency rating of -22 per cent this week, up 25 points from the rating of -47 per cent recorded on 4th September, which was the last poll conducted with Boris Johnson as Prime Minister.
One-fifth (20 per cent) of voters find the Government competent versus 42 per cent who find the Government incompetent.
Ms Truss’s personal approval rating has also risen four points to three per cent since 7th September, the day after she formally took office.

More than one quarter (28 per cent) approved of her overall job performance, compared to 25 per cent who disapprove.
Sir Keir’s own approval rating stands at four per cent, up seven points from 7th September, with one-third (33 per cent) approving of the Labour leader’s job performance, compared to 29 per cent who disapprove.
In a head-to-head, Ms Truss leads Sir Keir by four points with 40 per cent of voters believing she would be the better PM at this moment than the Labour leader.
But, in a sign of the challenge still facing Ms Truss as the new Tory leader, more than a quarter (28 per cent) of respondents believe a Labour majority would be the most likely outcome if a general election were held in the next six months.
This compares to 25 per cent who expect a Conservative majority, with 15 per cent expecting a Tory-led minority government and 12 per cent expecting a Labour-led minority government.
Redfield & Wilton Strategies surveyed 2,000 British adults online on 18th September.
