It’s been almost 70 years since a British monarch was crowned and, not surprisingly, much has changed over the decades. For a start, this coronation will be live-streamed. It will also have a new coronation route through the packed streets of London.
Here’s how the day will unfold:

Order of events
3pm AEST
Viewing areas along the King’s coronation route are opened to the public.
4.15pm AEST
Invited guests begin to arrive at Westminster Abbey.
6pm AEST
The congregation is to be seated inside the Abbey.
6.30pm AEST
The various heads of state, foreign royals, British royals, prime ministers and other overseas government representatives, as well as British MPs, start to arrive.
7:20pm AEST
The King and Queen Consort travel from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the Australian-built Diamond Jubilee State Coach. The procession will feature 200 members of the armed forces and proceed down The Mall before passing through Admiralty Arch, then Trafalgar Square before turning down Whitehall, Parliament Street and towards the Abbey.
7:53pm AEST
The King and Queen Consort arrive at the Abbey.
8pm AEST
The coronation begins. The ceremony is in five parts and is expected to run for about two hours.
10pm AEST
The return procession from the Abbey back to Buckingham Palace will follow the same 1.3-mile route as the first, but will be larger in scale, with 4000 military personnel making it the largest of its kind for a generation and will include members from across the Commonwealth.
10:45pm AEST
The King and Queen will receive a Royal Salute on the West Terrace of the Buckingham Palace garden, followed by three cheers from the assembled service personnel.
11.15pm AEST
The King, Queen and members of the royal family will appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the flypast involving more than 60 aircraft.
So, who’s coming?
- From Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will be in attendance. Along with Governor-General David Hurley, all the state governors, Matildas captain Sam Kerr, singer Nick Cave, Aboriginal artist Jasmine Coe, comedian Adam Hills and London-based nurse Emily Regan.
- A hundred heads of state along with royalty ranging from Canada’s Justin Trudeau, Japan’s Crown Prince Akishino and his wife, Kiko, to Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. US President Joe Biden will not be at the coronation, but First Lady Jill Biden is set to attend.

And the British royal family?
- Almost the entire family will be there. William, the Prince of Wales and heir to the throne, is expected to kneel before his father and pledge his loyalty in what’s known as the Homage of Royal Blood.
- Nine-year-old Prince George will be one of eight pages of honour during the service, joining a procession through the nave and assisting with the holding of robes.
- Prince Harry is not expected to take part in the service.
- Prince Andrew is also not expected to play any role in the ceremony.
By the numbers
- 2000 people are expected to attend the coronation.
- One member of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s family will attend – Prince Harry. Meghan and the couple’s children will remain at home in the US.
- At 74, Charles is the oldest monarch to ascend to the throne in the UK. King Charles will be the 40th monarch crowned at Westminster Abbey.
- William the Conqueror was the first monarch to be crowned at Westminster Abbey in 1066.

4pm AEST Sky News begins its coverage, hosted by Peter Stefanovic. Seven begins its coverage.
4.30pm AEST Channel Ten begins its coverage.
5pm AEST Coronation coverage begins on Channel Nine, but the channel will return to normal
programming by 6pm. ABC TV and ABC News begin their coverage, hosted by Julia Baird
and Jeremy Fernandez.
7.20pm AEST King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla set off from Buckingham Palace in the
Diamond Jubilee State Coach.
8pm AEST Charles and Camilla arrive at Westminster Abbey for the ceremony.
10pm AEST The royals travel back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach.
10.45pm AEST The royals are saluted on the West Terrace of Buckingham Palace garden.
11.15pm AEST Fifteen members of the royal family, including King Charles and Queen Camilla,
gather on the Buckingham Palace balcony to watch the UK armed forces flypast.
