- Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham warned her not to use certain words
- Kathy Burke said she was irritated by those who cancel words
Kathy Burke has laid into the ‘w*****s’ trying to cancel old-fashioned terms of endearment such as ‘babe’ and ‘sweetheart’.
The 59-year-old actress, who was brought up in North London and is fiercely down to earth, revealed a conversation with Peaky Blinders star Stephen Graham, 49, who warned her not to use them because they had become inappropriate.
Ms Burke said: ‘I said something about, ”She’s nice and her bird’s really nice as well”, and Stephen was like, ”You can’t say bird, can you? You’re not allowed to say bird any more”.
‘And I said ”Well, I do”, and I call people ”babe” and ”sweetheart”.
‘I’d like to think if somebody was offended they would tell me, and then I wouldn’t say it.’

She was speaking on her podcast, Where There’s A Will There’s A Wake, when her guest, fellow Londoner Danny Dyer, 45, brought up Cockney rhyming slang, asking: ‘Can you say ”treacles” now? ‘Treacle tart’ is ‘sweetheart’.
‘I sometimes call my dad ”son”. I go, ”You alright, me old son?”.
‘Everyone’s offended. Every f***er’s offended all the f*****g time.’
Ms Burke, who starred in Harry Enfield And Chums and Absolutely Fabulous, said she was irritated by those who cancel words, and claimed being politically correct had been ‘hijacked by w*****s’.

She added: ‘You learn to choose your words wisely. And I think what is it you want to say that’s so bad? Referring to ladies as ‘birds’ and ‘treacles’ – that’s not abusive.’
