Extinction Rebellion founder Roger Hallam is in hospital after revealing that he ‘crushed’ his leg in a cycling accident.
The controversial environmental activist, who also helped form eco mobs Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil, shared a photo of himself in a hospital bed with his thumbs up ahead of Extinction Rebellion’s mass protest in London last weekend which was dubbed ‘The Big One’.
Mr Hallam, 56, was pictured with an external fixator on his right leg which is used to hold broken bones in place with metal pins or screws.
Issuing an update last Friday – on the first day of ‘The Big One’ – Mr Hallam wrote: ‘I am writing this from a hospital bed. See the picture. I fell off my bike and crushed my leg bone.’
Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and Just Stop Oil joined forces with several other campaign groups in an attempt to mobilise around 50,000 eco-zealots in London from April 21-24.

Eco-zealots descended on London over the weekend before Just Stop Oil carried on ‘slow’ marches this week
Meanwhile yesterday, Just Stop Oil staged further protests through ‘slow’ marches across the capital.

More than 100 members began marching from five different locations at around 7.30am this morning in a bid to keep their momentum going.
It was the second day the eco-group carried out demonstrations, having provoked anger from motorists on Monday when they also walked slowly in roads and held banners.
Among the protesters yesterday was solicitor Kate Logan, who said she believes ‘time is running out’ to stop climate change.
The 38-year-old said: ‘Ordinary people know this, but our government keeps licensing new fossil fuels. They are writing a death sentence for millions. I spent years signing petitions and campaigning for change via the “usual” methods, to no avail, civil resistance is now our only option.’
Writing from hospital, Mr Hallam – who ironically owns a farmhouse which was described as ‘poorly insulated’ in an official energy performance certificate – encouraged supporters to take part in further demonstrations, adding: ‘Remember to do the JSO slow marches if you are in the UK.
‘But most of all remember we are going to have the biggest life experiences imaginable in the next decade and we all need to stick by each other and push on through. And be cheerful about it.
‘Lots of love from the hospital! x (thanks to the NHS)’.
Mr Hallam has previously come under scrutiny for comparing the murder of six million Jewish people at the hands of the Nazis to other historical massacres, while he also claimed that the memory of the Holocaust was holding Germany back.

July 2020 saw an announcement from XR that Mr Hallam no longer has a formal role in the organisation, and has moved on to Just Stop Oil.
The Just Stop Oil ringleader was recently released from Wandsworth prison having been charged over a plot to cause chaos on the M25 in November.
On February 28, he tweeted: ‘4 months in a British prison for making a speech – I am finally out. I am applying for the charge to be dismissed. Last week my 2nd jury trial found me not guilty. That’s me 2, carbon state 0. I hope they don’t want to make 3-0. Would be embarrassing.’ He added on Facebook that he was ‘mad as hell’ about being imprisoned.
A month prior to his release, XR’s former spokeswoman compared the group to a ‘cult’ – and claimed protesters were told to cry on television and bring their children to demonstrations as part of a ‘masterclass on how to manipulate emotion’.
Zion Lights wrote that Mr Hallam ‘referred to himself as a prophet’ and liked to claim that war and murder are around the corner as part of a bid to inspire ‘terror and devotion’ among followers.
Mr Hallam – and three others – were also recently cleared of conspiracy to damage property after taking part in a protest which involved throwing pink paint over several charity buildings.
Who is Roger Hallam? His past litany of remarks:
Farmer Roger Hallam who helped found Extinction Rebellion wants to ‘bring down all the regimes in the world’, starting with Britain, and believes those running society ‘should have a bullet through their heads’.
There have been allegations of a ‘cult-like’ following for the Welshman who compares his tactics to those of heroic activists Gandhi and Martin Luther King. He is said to have been inspired to take up climate activism after his farm in Wales went bust due to bad weather.
Ironically, Mr Hallam owns a farmhouse which was described as ‘poorly insulated’ in an official energy performance certificate. His 2,000 sq ft farmhouse in Carmarthen, South Wales, was given the lowest possible energy rating on the certificate. It is unclear if Mr Hallam has taken steps to improve the rating since it was issued six years ago.
Asked about the certificate, a spokesman for the group said: ‘This is the point – UK homes are the leakiest in Europe, with many millions of families being unable to afford the advice and help needed to insulate the building they live in.’
Hallam has also compared the murder of six million Jewish people at the hands of the Nazis to other historical massacres and claimed that memory of the Holocaust was holding Germany back.
