A wealth of famous faces have visited Buckingham Palace over the years, but a handful of stars have also behaved very cheekily while there.
From stealing loo rolls to doing drugs, multiple celebrities have taken more than a few liberties during their visits to the iconic royal palace, in central London.
From The Crown star Olivia Colman admitting that her husband had nabbed himself a souvenir from Buckingham Palace through to music legends The Beatles sparking up a joint in the royal loos, the palace has often been a hive of misbehaviour for some of our most beloved British icons.
So who are the famous offenders and what mischief did they get into?
Denise Van Outen
TV presenter Denise famously made the headlines after she told viewers on The Big Breakfast that she once “borrowed” an ashtray and a tissue box holder from the palace in 1998.
Describing it as “just a bit of fun” the presenter did admit she had apologised for the incident and returned it to The Queen along with a stuffed camel and a note that read: "Sorry, Ma'am. I didn't meant to give you the hump."
Emma Bunton
Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, also confessed to having had a light-fingered moment at the palace after she was invited to perform for the Queen.
During an appearance on ITV2’s Celebrity Juice Emma told viewers she had once pinched a sign from the ladies loos during a concert for the Golden Jubilee back in 2002.
Piers Morgan
Former GMB presenter and Britain’s Got Talent Judge, Piers Morgan also admitted to being a serial offender when it came to swiping one very specific item from celebrity homes – toilet roll!
Alongside a “black and monogrammed” loo roll from Simon Cowell’s home, Piers also nabbed a roll from the palace.
Yet his nerve failed him when he attended the White House during Barack Obama’s presidency, with the star telling the Mail on Sunday: "I feared I would find myself in jail.”
Olivia Colman
Another loo roll stealer was Oscar winner Olivia Colman's husband as she admitted he had picked up the unconventional souvenir during a visit to support a charity event.
"My husband stole some loo roll just to say we got it from Buckingham Palace," told the Sunday Times.
It is currently unclear whether Olivia herself was involved in the loo paper pilfery.
The Beatles
Beatles legend John Lennon once famously claimed the fab four smoked cannabis in the palace loos before collecting their MBE’s back in 1965.
George Harrison later disputed the claims, saying the band were just enjoying an ordinary cigarette because we were so nervous” ahead of the momentous occasion.
Robbie Williams
Singer Robbie Williams, who is best known for his hit Angels and work with band Take That, admitted to smoking cannabis at the palace during an event that was believed to be the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert in 2012.
He told the Sun in 2017: "Threw up in Buckingham Palace? No. I smoked a spliff in Buckingham Palace."
Stephen Fry
Comedian and writer Stephen Fry, who himself is a friend of the Prince of Wales, reportedly took cocaine at Buckingham Palace, according to his memoir.
In the book entitled, ‘More Fool Me’ Stephen admitted to taking the drug in several other royal palaces as well as in the House of Lords, House of Commons and BBC Television Centre.
He wrote: "I have brought, you might say, gorgeous palaces, noble properties and elegant honest establishments into squalid disrepute.”
A palace insider’s opinion
Not everyone has been quite so convinced by some of the claims however. A former press spokesman for the Queen, Dickie Arbiter shared his thoughts on the claims of theft, and insisted that law abiding visitors weren’t missing out.
"It's quite ridiculous. The toilet paper doesn't have 'Buckingham Palace' on it, it's just plain white paper like everyone else has," he said.
He also went on to suggest that claimants were likely looking for publicity rather than mementos from their visit.
"It's not that they're taking anything of value. It's just so they can say, I've stolen a loo roll from Buckingham Palace," he said.
"Go to Poundland and buy yourself a pack of nine."
