Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn just weren’t meant to be.
Over the weekend, it was revealed the couple broke up after six years of dating — a truly shocking development considering fans were under the impression everything was A-OK between the longtime lovers. So, what the f**k happened?
While ET‘s initial source insisted the breakup wasn’t “dramatic” and that the pair ended things weeks ago because they’d simply grown apart, a new insider now has some light to shed on what led to this heartbreaking decision.
Speaking to People on Monday, an insider close to both the Grammy winner and the Conversations with Friends actor said the split was largely caused by “differences in their personalities.” Apparently, things weren’t nearly so easy for the couple as it seemed from the outside! The source said:
“They’ve had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together.”
This time, the 33-year-old songwriter and 32-year-old Harriet star “ultimately” realized they “weren’t the right fit for one another.” It’s kind of shocking to think they were together for so long and didn’t realize their personalities couldn’t fit until now, but there might be an explanation for that.
As you may know, the pair was first publicly linked in May 2017 when it was revealed they’d already been quietly dating for months. It’s believed they first met at the 2016 Met Gala. Early into their relationship, Taylor was in hibernation mode, the insider noted:
“They had plenty in common and fell in love in a safe bubble while she was retreating from the world during Reputation. Then the pandemic hit, and they were locked down together and able to continue growing their relationship in this insulated way. But he didn’t really ‘know’ her yet outside of that bubble.”
He didn’t know her? After six years?? Hmm… This source makes it sounds like she’s a completely different person when she’s around other people — something he didn’t see much during the pando.
Per the insider, they bonded over their passions for art and creativity, including co-writing and/or co-producing 10 songs together (with Joe using the pseudonym William Bowery) on Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. These albums helped Taylor emerge from lockdown on an even higher level of stardom. Apparently, Joe just can’t keep up! The source shared:
“Joe has struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public.”
She’s Taylor freaking Swift! Her level of fame shouldn’t have been a surprise to him! But we do understand things really amped up in the last few years… What a bummer if her success is the reason they broke up! The source added, however:
“The differences in their personalities have also become harder to ignore after years together. They’ve grown apart.”
Interestingly, even with all these differences, they were reportedly “talking about marriage as recently as a few months ago,” according to multiple sources. So, they really changed their minds about this romance quickly! Ultimately, it was T-Swizzle who pulled the plug:
“Taylor didn’t see them working out in the long run.”
Not ready for a future together, they broke up “recently” and it was “not dramatic,” the source added:
“They are friendly. She doesn’t have anything bad to say about Joe. They just grew apart. Taylor is staying very focused on her tour right now.”
The confidant insisted:
“There is a lot of respect still between them.”
Whoa! This really does sound amicable! But we’ll have to wait and see what kind of music the performer releases in the future to confirm whether or not she has a bad thing to say about Joe!
