BAFTA's miss Bernard Cribbins from In Memoriam segment

BAFTA host Richard E. Grant lends his support to ‘furious and appalled’ viewers after Bernard Cribbins was missed off the In Memoriam segment

BAFTA viewers were left ‘furious’ after late actor Bernard Cribbins was missed from the show’s In Memoriam segment during Sunday’s show.

The much loved actor – who was the voice and face of childhood TV and film for generations of Britons before a career resurgence in Doctor Who – died in July 2022 at the age of 93.

And the evening’s host Richard E. Grant appeared to agree with fans by liking a tweet that described the snub as ‘appalling’ and said BAFTA should be ‘disgusted in themsleves’.

The actor had been forced to choke back tears as she introduction the segment remembering those in the film industry who died in the last 12 months – following his wife Joan Washington’s death in September 2021.

He later liked a tweet that read: ‘Hi Darlings, have watched The BAFTA’s on TV & I’m absolutely appalled that the fabulous Bernard Cribbins was not mentioned in stars that we’ve lost within the last year, they should be disgusted with themselves, words fail me’.

Furious: BAFTA viewers were left ‘furious’ after late actor Bernard Cribbins was missed from the show’s In Memoriam segment during Sunday’s show

Another viewer wrote: ‘Bernard Cribbins, I loved him. My kids loved him, everyone loved him. Criminal he was left out of the BAFTAs’.

And a third said: ‘@BAFTA shame you didn’t mention the late great Bernard Cribbins in the round up of film talent we lost in the last year. Perhaps you are him for a mention in the TV Awards but he was more than a TV actor. Plenty of films under his belt’.

‘The BAFTA snobs have snubbed Bernard Cribbins’.

And another added: ‘How the hell did BAFTA NOT mention Bernard Cribbins in the ‘people we lost in the last 12 months’ montage? His work touched every generation of viewers alive today from Carry On movies to Fawlty Towers to The Wombles to Doctor Who to Old Jack’s Boat on CBeebies. Disgraceful’.

More agreed stating: ‘There can’t be many more much loved and much missed actors than Bernard Cribbins but BAFTA didn’t have time to honour his passing. Less Alison Hammond/more Bernard Cribbins!’.

Taking to Twitter themsleves BAFTA released a statement reading: ‘With limited time in our broadcast it isn’t possible to honour all those who have sadly passed away. Bernard features in our online record and given his influential work in TV, he will be considered for inclusion in the next Television Awards broadcast’.

However fans found the reason a difficult one to accept: ‘Let me add my voice to the number of people angry with @bafta for not including Bernard Cribbins in their list of actors who have passed away recently. To say that he might be considered for a mention at the TV awards is very insulting’.

With a second adding: ‘You literally interviewed Geri Halliwell … Don’t tell me there wasn’t enough time for Bernard Cribbins’.

The beloved actor’s passing came just months after his wife of 70-years Gillian passed away.

While no cause of death was released fans and famous friends rushed to pay their respects to the late star.

Sunday’s ceremony saw Austin Butler was awarded Best Actor at the awards, beating out favourite Colin Farrell in a shock upset.

The actor fought back tears as he paid tribute to the Presley family while accepting the honour, after portraying the late King Of Rock in the Baz Lurhmann biopic.

Thanking all of the crew and team he worked with on the film, Austin admitted he was ‘just trying to take it all in,’ as he fought back tears while accepting the honour.

Speaking out: He later liked a tweet that read: ‘Hi Darlings, have watched The BAFTA’s on TV & I’m absolutely appalled that the fabulous Bernard Cribbins was not mentioned in stars that we’ve lost within the last year, they should be disgusted with themselves, words fail me’.

Shock: Another viewer wrote: ‘Bernard Cribbins, I loved him. My kids loved him, everyone loved him. Criminal he was left out of the BAFTAs’

‘This means the world to me,’ Butler told the ceremony, still using the Elvis drawl that he learned for Baz Luhrmann’s movie.

He also paid tribute to the Presley family who offered insight into Elvis’ life for the biopic, adding he ‘hopes he made them proud.’

Cate Blanchett was also awarded Best Leading Actress for her performance in the biopic Tar, the film’s only big win of the night.

Tearfully, she accepted the gong as she thanked her mother and director Todd Field, adding that Blanchett also said that 2022 had been an ‘extraordinary year for women’.

Sorry: Taking to Twitter themsleves BAFTA released a statement reading: ‘With limited time in our broadcast it isn’t possible to honour all those who have sadly passed away

Not washing: However fans found the reason a difficult one to accept and branded it ‘shameful’

She added that it had broken down that women’s experience is not ‘monolithic’, and that her role as Lydia Tar ‘was a dangerous and career-ending potential undertaking’.

Netflix’s German war epic All Quiet On The Western Front was the big winner of the night with a total of seven gongs, including Best Film, while The Banshees of Inisherin was close behind with five, including Best British Film and Best Supporting Actor and Actress respectively.

The film, which is based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, equals Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2001) as the film which is not spoken in the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.

Directed by Edward Berger, it stars Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic and Devid Striesow.

During his opening monologue, Richard referenced Will Smith’s infamous slap at last year’s Oscars, telling audiences that ‘on my watch no one gets slapped tonight’.
