Bam Margera is working hard to stay on the sober train, all for his son — but is it too late in his estranged wife’s eyes?
The former MTV star has reportedly been hard at work prioritizing his health and sobriety after years of struggle — from substance abuse to psychiatric holds, he’s been going through it. But that’s all finally begun to change for the better, as he’s apparently been putting in the time and effort to straighten up, this time at one of Lamar Odom’s treatment centers. TMZ reported last month that he found inspiration to get clean after reconnecting with his 5-year-old son Phoenix. But now it sounds like there’s been a halt in their communication??
In court docs obtained by the news org on Thursday, Bam claimed to be totally sober already. Because of his effort, he asked for joint legal custody of Phoenix, whom he shares with ex Nikki Boyd, proposing overnight stays every other weekend so the two can continue to develop their bond. However, it sounds like momma bear isn’t too sold on the idea yet. In fact, she’s reportedly trying to keep the two as separated as possible.
In the legal docs, the Jackass star expressed confusion over Nikki’s alleged lack of support in his sobriety journey, specifically because according to him, she, too, has struggled with addiction in the past. He noted that he’s been committed to treatment and therapy, and has even completed courses already, but his ex is attempting to keep their son far away from him. The reality star claimed she’s been refusing to let the pair speak on the phone, and that she’s withholding the child from his extended family, too!
If true, this is quite the change in tune from what we last heard… In their report last month, TMZ indicated that Nikki was “allowing to talk to their kid again,” with her attorney David Glass telling the outlet she’d “given the green light” for a relationship repair to commence. At the time, Bam and Phoenix were reportedly “talking over FaceTime” chats, which were apparently “being modulated by one of Bam’s therapists” to ensure a healthy dialogue.

That was a pretty major step for the 43-year-old, as he’d not long before made the threat to his ex — in very graphic language — to continue using drugs unless she let him see Phoenix. The ultimatum, of course, didn’t pan out. Instead Bam saw the light and got proactive in his journey to sobriety. Then she offered the contact.
At the time, Nikki was reportedly not involved in the phone calls, but the dynamic between the father and son was “going well.” But maybe the mother’s concern came after the Viva La Bam alum reportedly ditched treatment for a Las Vegas stint with his buddies? It’s not like you could blame her for being worried about a relapse — and protective of their son above all. Bam has been in and out of rehab many times throughout their relationship, and even more since they split. Just because he says he’s sober doesn’t make it so…
Hopefully Bam continues to get healthy no matter what — and then can prove himself to both Nikki and the court to secure a relationship with little Phoenix!
