BBC Breakfast’s John Watson in hospital dash as he tells fans he’s ‘getting old’

John Watson has sparked concern after sharing a picture from his hospital bed after sustaining an injury.

The BBC Breakfast star told fans on Thursday, 27 April, that he’s torn his meniscus (soft cartilage found on both sides of a person’s knee) as he shared a snap of his left knee all bandaged up.

“Less of a dash more of a hop to the studio come Monday…” he wrote next to the photo posted on Twitter.

Fans were quick to question what he’d done and wished the sports presenter a speedy recovery.

“Noooo. What have you done? Hope you’re ok,” wrote one person.

John replied: “Thanks Mel – tore my meniscus. Getting old”.

“John! Hope you're ok mate!” said someone else, as ex Premier League referee Chris Foy said: “Go steady John”.

His BBC co-star Jon Kay also wrote: “Take care, John. I’ve got a glittery sock for the other foot if you need it."

John has been quite accident prone of late, and earlier this month gave himself a black eye while trying to get dressed in the dark.

Showcasing his bruised eye on Twitter, he told fans: “The joys of getting dressed in the dark at 4am… (I really do need to watch out for those doors) not that you’d notice, great job from the brekkie make up team”.

In recent weeks, there’s been reports that the BBC has been offering voluntary redundancies, with presenting veteran Huw Edwards receiving a letter.

He went on to address the matter and insisted that everyone did.

He tweeted a photo of himself and his mother, both drinking bubbly, and captioned the snap: "Reality check, A standard exercise by @BBCNews (one of many over the years) is just that.

"A standard invitation to consider applying for voluntary redundancy. Nothing more. As my mam says, don't believe everything in the papers."

The letter comes as, according to the Mirror, the publicly funded broadcaster is looking to save millions. The publication has also reported Huw, 61, is on a yearly salary of around £410,000.

Huw joined the BBC more than 40 years ago and regularly presents the six o'clock and ten o'clock bulletins.

Elsewhere, fellow presenter Clive Myrie has been named in the £255,000 to £259,000 bracket while Sophie Raworth receives in the region of £305,000 and £309,999 a year.

Sophie and Clive are also thought to have received the “standard exercise” letters as well.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC1.
