BBC star Matt Baker lifts lid on ‘scariest part’ of Strictly Come Dancing

Matt Baker shares ‘scariest part’ of Strictly Come Dancing

Countryfile and Our Farm In the Dales presenter Matt Baker doesn’t often discuss his stint on Strictly Come Dancing, which he did 13 years ago.

However, he recently opened up to Zoe Ball about his appearance on the Saturday evening BBC show.

Asked if he was scared about it, he revealed the “scariest bit” about appearing on the show is “when you hear your name announced and you’ve had not a lot of time to try and remember the routine you’re about to do”.

He continued while appearing on BBC Radio 2: “The music starts, and it sounds quite different to the tape that you’ve been practising with.

“And you just think to yourself what’s about to happen in the next two and a half minutes. And you just go with it. And the heartbeat really goes,” he confessed.

Matt was runner up on the eighth series of Strictly Come Dancing back in 2010 after being partnered with Aliona Vilani.

They came second to winners Kara Tointon and Artem Chigvintsev.

He impressed viewers and judges alike with his gymnastics skills as he worked his way through the contest all the way to the final.

He became known for his flips and had a particularly memorable performance on Movie Week where he danced as Austin Powers.

He wasn’t averse to the odd pithy judges comment though, and when he posted a clip of his Strictly highlights to Instagram in August 2021, which included the late Len Goodman issuing some criticism to Matt, his wife Nicola leapt to his defence in the comments.

Len said: “I wasn’t too keen on those flip flops at the end, they had nothing to do with the Samba.”

Despite the fact that the remarks in the flashback video were 11 years old Nicola wasn’t letting it go and penned: “I loved the ‘flip-flops.’” The presenter then responded to his wife with several flip-flop emojis.

Alongside Nicola, Matt’s mother also shared her support for the “flip-flops”.

She wrote: “One of the most nerve raking weeks of our lives for your Dad & I – but we loved it especially the [flip-flop emoji]” (sic)
