Ben Affleck, 50, forlorn expression at the Grammy Awards last month became a meme across social media, with a clip of his wife Jennifer Lopez, 53, appearing to snap at her husband also. The Hollywood actor has shared what really happened in the harmless conversation while also sharing his upset at the “drunk” claim for creating a “tremendous stigma” around addiction.
In a new interview, Ben was asked if he was bothered by the meme circulating of himself after the Grammys affected him.
While sharing the details of his heated discussion with his wife, Ben also shared his upset over the drunk claims, after having previously opened up about his addiction issues.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben shared that he did have a “good time”, despite keeping a straight face when captured on camera.
He also shared his shock when host Trevor Noah approached him and what happened in the heated exchange with his wife JLo.
Ben said: “They were framing us in this shot, but I didn’t know they were rolling. I leaned into her and I was like, ‘As soon they start rolling, I’m going to slide away from you and leave you sitting next to Trevor’.”
The Hollywood star then quipped that his wife responded: “You better not f*****g leave.”
However, Ben appeared to be upset with the drunk claims from the evening due to his own past addiction battles.
He continued: “And yeah, it is your wife’s work event. And I’ve gone to events and been pissed off. I’ve gone and been bored.
“I’ve gone to award shows and been drunk, a bunch. Nobody ever once said I’m drunk. [But at the Grammys] they were like, ‘He’s drunk.’ And I thought that was interesting.
“That raises a whole other question about whether it’s wise to acknowledge addiction because there’s a lot of compassion, but there is still a tremendous stigma, which is often quite inhibiting.”
Ben has suffered notably from his own addiction battles and has been sober since 2020.
This comes as Ben previously admitted that if he was still with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner he might “still be drinking”.
The former couple married in 2005 and divorced in 2018 after having three children together: Victoria, 17, Seraphina, 14, and Samuel, nine.
Speaking on the Howard Stern Show in 2021, the Argo actor admitted: “I’d probably still be drinking. It’s part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped.
“I was like ‘I can’t leave because of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’
“I drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which was not the solution.”
Ben has checked himself into rehab for alcohol addiction several times over the years, including stints in 2001 and 2017.
He also admitted he and Jennifer did “everything they could” before calling time on their relationship.
Ben explained: “The truth was, we took our time, we made the decision … We grew apart.
“We had a marriage that didn’t work, this happens, with somebody that I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn’t be married any longer.”
