King Charles made the decision to evict Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from Frogmore Cottage shortly after the publication of Harry's memoir Spare, with royal insiders claiming the book directly influenced his decision.
The bombshell book saw Harry make a number of shocking claims about his estranged family. One section saw him claim that Queen Consort Camilla leaked stories to the press about members of the Royal Family in order to rehabilitate her own image.
He also discussed his childhood fears that she would become a "wicked stepmother" like the ones in fairytales.
The Duke of Sussex also took part in a number of TV interviews to promote the book, including 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper where he branded his step-mother "the villain".
He told the TV presenter: "She was the villain. She was the third person in their marriage. She needed to rehabilitate her image."
Harry later labelled Camilla as "dangerous", saying: "[Her need to rehabilitate her image] made her dangerous because of the connections that she that she was forging within the British press."
Royal insiders have now claimed that Harry's comments about his step-mother have caused irreparable damage to his relationship with his father, and is the primary reason behind his decision to evict Harry and Meghan from their UK base of Frogmore Cottage.
A source told The Mirror: "It was the last straw. Harry was well aware how Camilla would be a red line for his father and he crossed with flagrant disregard anyway."
"The King felt without a doubt it crossed a line – it was the ultimate act of disrespect."
Charles has since requested that Harry and Meghan vacate Frogmore Cottage, a decision that is said to have left the couple "stunned" and two other royals "appalled".
The residence has since been offered to the disgraced Prince Andrew, who is also thought to be against the shakeup of royal households, with insiders claiming that he would rather remain in Royal Lodge, where he has lived since 2003.
Meanwhile, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond exclusively told OK! that Prince William and Kate Middleton are likely to be supportive of the King's decision.
She told us: "They will be absolutely supportive of Charles’ decision. They probably don’t want Harry and Meghan as their near neighbours.
“I think they’d probably have Andrew. They’ll be completely on board with this and support Charles.
"Charles has probably spoken to William about this, but I think they talk about these things a lot.”
OK! have contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.
