Cheryl fans left devastated as she’s replaced in West End show 2:22 A Ghost Story

Cheryl’s fans were left devastated last night, Sunday 20 March, to learn that she wasn’t taking part in her usual 2:22 A Ghost Story performance.

The singer has been starring in the hit West End play since January, but took the night off yesterday – the same day as Mother’s Day.

Cheryl’s night off also comes a couple of days before son Bear's birthday on 22 March.

Gemma Yates is believed to have filled the Girls Aloud star’s spot for the performance, which appears to have been advertised on A Ghost Story’s website for some time.

The announcement on its ‘Booking Info’ page reads: “Please note that Cheryl will not be performing on Sunday 19th March”.

In the wake of her absence, disappointed theatre-goers took to Twitter.

One person penned: “So went to see @222aghoststory today and found out @cherylofficial was off!

"But fair play to Gemma Yates -Round you did amazing!"

Another said: "I specifically avoided this week as it's Mother's Day and Bear's birthday, didn't want to risk it!"

While Cheryl wasn’t there, another person who attended last night’s performance labelled the cast as “fantastic”.

They wrote: “Finally got to see #222AGhostStory #222 all the way through & it’s just as amazing as the 1st experience. Cast were fantastic & loved every second, even knowing what was coming with 2nd half. Don’t miss out on such a haunting experience as it’s soon to end in London.”

Cheryl has been applauded by both fans and critics since making her West End debut earlier this year.

Following her opening night, one fan said: “I honestly felt like I was living a fever dream watching a ghost story starring Cheryl in her west end debut. I honestly really enjoyed the show and our Chezza smashed it, and the whole cast are great. What a night!"

Labelling her performance as “awesome", another wrote: “Omg. That was awesome. Cheryl you were fab (so were you all) Thoroughly enjoyed.”

Meanwhile, the likes of The Telegraph described the songstress as a “class act”.

Elsewhere, The Independent said in its review: “As Jenny, Cheryl gives a confident, measured performance. Her Geordie accent may be instantly recognisable, but she fully inhabits the role. She excels in the show’s quieter, more naturalistic moments, and has a knack for comic timing.”

It’s believed Cheryl took on the West End role in a bid to “reinvent” herself.

A source told us: “Cheryl wants to reinvent herself in 2023. She was on TV all of the time, she was the sweetheart of the nation. But she stepped back for a while to focus on being a mother.

“She’s excited to be coming back. Some things haven’t worked out in the past that she’s tried, but this is a very exciting time for her.”

They added that the mum-of-one has reportedly wanted to “get back on the scene for a while”.
