Our precious mom!
Family Statement
In a statement to the Associated Press, Lynn’s family said the iconic singer died on Tuesday at her home in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee.
The statement read: “Our precious mom, Loretta Lynn, passed away peacefully this morning, October 4, in her sleep at home in her beloved ranch in Hurricane Mills.”
The exact cause of death is unknown at this moment.
Lynn’s career spanned more than six decades after breaking onto the music scene in the early 1960s.
She was a mother-of-four when she started her singing career, crafting the persona of a tough working woman.
The 18-time Grammy nominee wrote fearlessly about sex and love, cheating husbands, divorce and birth control, ascending her to stardom in the country music world.
Lynn was best known for the songs Coal Miner’s Daughter, You Ain’t Woman Enough, The Pill, Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind), all released during the 1960s and 70s.
She also made history several times during her career, including becoming the first woman to receive the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association in 1972.
Lynn married her husband Oliver Doolittle Lynn when she was just 15 years old according to official records, although she previously stated in interviews she was just 13.
They had four children by the time she was 20 and they also had a set of twins later.
The Lynns stayed together until Oliver died on August 22, 1996.
According to the AP, he eventually had both feet amputated due to complications of diabetes.
Loretta then put her monumental country career on hold to care for him in his final years.
Sissy Spacek won the best actress Oscar for her performance as Lynn, while the film, Coal Miner’s Daughter, also received six other nominations at the Academy Awards that year, including best picture.
The biopic also went on to receive Golden Globe nominations.
After moving to Tennessee in the 1990s, Lynn built a replica of her childhood on her sprawling ranch and even a museum which continues to be a tourist destination today.
Tributes to the late country star have poured in on social media, including the micro-blogging site Twitter.
