Darius Danesh’s family say he had ‘severe pain’ before star found unresponsive

Darius Campbell Danesh auditions for ITV Popstars in 2001

Darius Campbell Danesh had been suffering “severe pain” following two previous car accidents, which was getting progressively worse in the lead-up to his death, his family revealed today.

It has been confirmed that he was using marijuana, painkillers and an inhalable anaesthetic drug at the time of his tragic death, aged just 41.

In a statement published today, his family said: “In the days leading up to his death, Darius had been suffering from severe nerve pain in his neck following car accidents in 2010 and 2021, which was progressively ‘getting worse’.

“He had taken pain medication, marijuana and chloroethane to manage the intensity of the pain prior to his death.”

The former Popstars star had received doctors’ offers to operate on his neck back in 2010, fearing it could damage his vocal cords, and his symptoms had continued to flare up.

The statement added that Darius had enjoyed a night out with his friends hours before he was found dead.

The family continued: “The night before Darius passed, he had dinner with close friends, who reported that ‘Darius was in a lot of pain, but he was in good spirits when he was with us’.

“They stayed together until the early hours of the morning and made plans to meet the following day. When Darius did not show up and could not be reached, the hotel staff were asked to check on him.

“Around 11.50am on August 11, Darius was found unresponsive in bed by the hotel staff in the apartment where he was staying, having inhaled chloroethane using a bag, which led to respiratory arrest.

“The Rochester Fire and Police Department pronounced Darius deceased shortly after at 12.01pm.

“The autopsy report also concluded that Darius’ heart was twice the expected size. This may have contributed to his respiratory arrest”, the statement said as reported by MailOnline.

The Popstar to Operastar winner’s girlfriend, Lauren Cheek, previously said that Darius had been unaware of his heart condition.

She told The Sun in July: “So many things could have taken him, but this one thing did, and he died in his sleep. His mum told me they only found out after they did the autopsy.

“His heart was twice the size it was supposed to be, which was fitting, because that is genuinely how he was — he had so much love.”

His devastating death prompted an outpouring of grief, especially from his famous friends including Gerard Butler and Pete Waterman.

In a poignant letter, Gerard said Darius “led by example” and “pushed those he loved to be the best possible versions of themselves”.
