EastEnders fans ‘broken’ by Lola’s funeral as they call for soap to win ‘all the awards’

EastEnders fans said they were "broken" and "in bits" after Tuesday's episode of EastEnders as Albert Square said their final goodbyes to Lola Pearce at her emotional and heartbreaking funeral.

In emotional scenes on 27 June, the funeral car drove through the Square on its way to the church while residents gathered around and clapped for Lola, while some people placed flowers onto the vehicle as it passed by.

Lola’s husband Jay spoke at the funeral and delivered an emotional statement as he said: “ I was gonna bring a guitar but Lola told me not to make anyone cry, not for the wrong reasons so I thought I’d just speak from the heart but my heart is so full of pain, pain I never felt before in my whole life.

“But also full of love, love for this amazing, incredible, brave, amazing, I've said amazing woman, brilliant mum, fantastic friend, perfect granddaughter, and the best wife that I could ever imagine. She was my everything and it took me so long to realize it, so don't waste a minute, if you love someone, you tell them.

“You hold them there, you hold them tight, wish I could hold you Lo. But I can’t, but know that you’re there, you’re in my heart.”

Jay’s speech was followed by soft clapping from the guests who also attended the service to also say their goodbyes to the long-standing character. Lola’s daughter Lexi also took the stand to say a few words about her mum who she sweetly described as her “hero”.

The guests were then brought to tears as an emotional montage of Lola was played to the room.

Fans said they were "broken" after watching the "heartbreaking" funeral scenes, with many fans calling for the actors to win an award.

One fan took to Twitter and said: "In bits #EastEnders this is heartbreaking", while another wrote: "B****y hell wasnt ready for that video montage, from start to finish this story line has totally broke me."

Another penned: "Jeez, this @bbceastenders spisode is a real tearjerker. It needs to win ALL the awards from the writing to the acting & everything in between. Just wow!", while another tweeted: "The actors on this storyline deserve every award going".

Fans were particularly impressed by little Lexi's speech where she called her mum her "hero". One viewer said: "Lexi's eulogy… tbh one of little Isabella's best performances #eastenders", while another wrote: "Jay’s speech was wonderful. As he said from the heart… And Lexi’s speech was perfect. #EastEnders".

In heart-wrenching scenes, Lola, played by Danielle Harold, took her final breaths on the show on 21 May when she lost her battle with brain cancer. The hairdresser, mother and granddaughter of Billy Mitchell, received the heart-breaking diagnosis last year and was told that she just had months to live before getting married to partner Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick).

Lola’s last appearance on the soap was labelled as "phenomenal" as one viewer commented: "Phenomenal performances from Danielle, Jamie and all involved for this storyline."

Another added: "The acting! I’m in tears, thank you for raising awareness & this story line", while a third said: "What an episode it was outstanding the whole cast just wow and the fox at the end."
