Musician Sir Elton John, 75, gave a rare insight into his relationship with the late Queen Elizabeth II in view of his 4.2 million Instagram followers today. He revealed that they had once danced together in a heartfelt post following her funeral this morning.

The star explained that a lot of his favourite memories with the late monarch had happened “out of the public eye”.

In a post liked by over 60,000 people, he shared a black and white picture of himself meeting the Queen in his youth for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

For comparison, he then posted another throwback snap of himself meeting the Queen once more in 2012 for her Diamond Jubilee Concert.

Beside the photographs, he wrote: “Today I’ll be joining the rest of the world in remembering Her Majesty The Queen.

“My own memories of her are filled with joy and admiration.

“The Queen honoured me with a CBE, a knighthood and the Companion of Honour.

“I was lucky enough to perform at three of her Jubilees,” he continued.

“They were always joyous and humbling experiences.

“But it was the moments out of the public eye that I will most fondly remember her for; dancing together to ‘Rock Around the Clock’ at Windsor Castle or experiencing her great wit, warmth and humour first hand.

“She served with grace and dedication, and she will be sorely missed,” he signed off.

Elton also paid tribute to the Queen on Thursday night during his concert in Toronto, where he spoke of her “inspiring presence”.

He told his fans how Queen Elizabeth had led the country through “some of our greatest and darkest moments” in a touching speech dedicated to the monarch.

He told his audience: “She was an inspiring presence to be around… she was fantastic.

“She led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace and decency and a genuine caring warmth.

“I’m 75 and she’s been with me all my life and I feel very sad that she won’t be with me anymore, but I’m glad she’s at peace, and I’m glad she’s at rest and she deserves it.

“She worked bloody hard. I send my love to her family. She’ll be missed… but we’ll celebrate her life tonight with you, OK?”

Queen Elizabeth II died “peacefully” at Balmoral Castle on September 8 at the age 96.

The tearful ceremony this morning marked the first time a monarch’s funeral has been held at Westminster since the 18th century.

Thousands of people lined the streets of London to bid a final farewell to the Queen, with many hoping to get a glimpse of her coffin as she passed by.

The public funeral service took place today in Westminster Abbey at 11am.
