Emmerdale's teen star Max Fletcher, who plans Marshall Hamston on the hit soap, has left the show after a turbulent seven-month journey where his character has struggled with his sexuality with Arthur Thomas.

With the actor's final scenes having already aired, Marshall said his goodbyes after his councillor dad, Colin Hamston, was unwilling to accept his own son’s identity.

Colin had tried to send the teen off to boarding school and repeatedly tried to tell him his “life of sin” would destroy him.

Even more harrowingly, it was also revealed recently that Colin had been physically abusive towards his son, prompting Laurel to open her home to Marshall in order to offer him sanctuary.

The youngster was then living with Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) and Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) after he revealed he was gay, just like the couple’s son, Arthur.

Arthur and Marshall not only became good friends but also decided to give it a go in a relationship before Marshall shocked viewers in the most recent episode, Thursday 20 July, when he revealed he was leaving the village to go to boarding school.

In emotional scenes, the teen thanked Laurel for all of her help before heaving Arthur heartbroken as he packed his bags.

Fans were sad to say their goodbyes to the character as one fan said Arthur and Marshall’s “story is one of the best things” that the show has done this year.

One fan took to Twitter and said: “Oh Arthur, him and Marshall’s story is one of the best things # Emmerdale has done this year, it’s a real shame that it’s ended so suddenly and like this”, while another added: “Who else knew that Marshall and Arthur would end this way. It was too much, too soon and he was completely overwhelmed by it all”.

Viewers will now watch a heartbroken Arthur try and move on as it is unknown if a future return could be on the cards for Marshall.

Elsewhere in the soap, Emmerdale has confirmed that a permanent tribute to Harriet Finch and Liv Dingle is coming to the village in the coming weeks, and it will be unveiled by Nicola King.

Both Harriet and Liv died in the wild wind storms that hit the village in the Autumn of 2022. Their deaths rocked the village, and as the anniversary approaches, the residents of Emmerdale are about to create a bus stop in memory of the duo.

Emmerdale continues weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV and ITVX.
