Fury over Strictly ‘hidden agenda’ in fix row as fan favourite ‘undermarked’

Strictly Come Dancing viewers came to Layton Williams defence after he performed an American Smooth.

During Saturday night’s show, head judge Shirley Ballas claimed his routine was not exactly “smooth”, while Anton Du Beke agreed his movements were slightly “lumpy”.

Craig Revel Horwood noted the West End star’s dance was dynamic as Motsi Mabuse said she felt it was an “exceptional” routine.

Despite the feedback Layton and his dance partner Nikita Kuzmin received an impressive 34 points out of 40 but this did not stop viewers taking aim at the panel.

Former Strictly pro James Jordan took to X, formerly Twitter, and wrote: “Hi guys. Only just started watching – what was Layton like???

“I will have to catch up – seems like not great scores so must have made mistakes.”

In a follow-up tweet, he commented: “Looking at the leaderboard so far – Layton’s popularity might be tested tonight.”

Social media users reacted to the post as one person said: “No mistakes…I loved the dance, especially them being in hold so much! Feels like the judges have a bit of a hidden agenda?”

Another agreed: “Yes apparently the smooth wasn’t smooth, but surely that is down to the choreography as he’s only dancing what he’s taught?! Anyways I thought it was great but then I can’t dance so I can’t comment really.”

A third wrote: “No mistakes but just not so smooth, it was good though but it did NOT blow me away… I love them though.”

However, others claimed Layton, 29, was undermarked and this could potentially impact his place in the competition.

One wrote: “Layton and Nikita undermarked. Some inconsistent scoring tonight.”

Another remarked: “I just want to say that I love how happy Layton and Nikita were tonight despite not having brilliant scores and comments from the judges. These two really are just enjoying every second of being on the show and it’s wonderful to see.”

“I’m guessing Layton’s in the bottom,” a third mused.

Meanwhile, former Coronation Street actress Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola received the highest score of the night from the judges with 37 points.

Strictly Come Dancing: The Results Show airs tonight on BBC One at 7.30pm.
