Hollyoaks’ Ali Bastian’s new baby’s Biblical name’s special family meaning

Husband-and-wife duo Ali Bastian and David O' Mahony have introduced their second child – Isabella Charlotte – to the world with an exclusive OK! photoshoot.

The couple's little girl was born on 11 February by Caesarean section after Hollyoaks' actress Ali suffered numerous health complications during labour.

One of the biggest questions on everyone's lips however, is how Ali, 41, and her Three Musketeers actor husband David, 40, who are also parents to Isla, three, decided on the name of their second daughter.

Catching up from their west London home, Ali revealed it was husband David that first suggested the name Isabella when she was pregnant

"I vetoed it initially," she says. "But then the name came back up again and I kind of put it through an actress database in my head. And I thought of Isabella Rossellini, who’s had to have so much strength, especially as she’s got older.

"She’s always been beautiful and rejected Hollywood ideas of womanhood. It just kind of stuck. We really liked it."

Isabella’s middle name is in tribute to David’s grandfather Charles.

"The name Charlie was another frontrunner," says David. "I really like names that are long and traditional but can be shortened to whatever matches their personality. So Izzy, Bella, Charlie… it’s all on the table. Izzy is kind of sticking at the moment."

Their daughter already has another nickname, too.

"Isla is calling her Baby Bingo [after a character in the TV cartoon Bluey]," laughs David.

Although their eldest daughter wanted to meet her sister in hospital, the couple felt the ward was too busy, and Isla instead met Isabella in person the day after she was born, when they returned home.

"Isla was up at the window waving, and she came down the stairs,” recalls David. “It was quite an intense moment for her. Isla was so gentle and loving."

The family spent much of the next morning cuddled up in bed together.

"We have photos of Isla just staring at her sister," says Ali. "It’s very sweet. They are really bonded. Whenever Isabella gets upset, Isla says in a funny little voice, ‘I think she needs her big sister.’"

However, Ali admits Isla had a "lot of wobblies" in the weeks prior to the birth.

"I think Isla knew that everything was about to change, and she was struggling. Once Isabella arrived there was a bit of relief – I think it makes sense to her now."
