Im just starting to feel human, but Im dreading teething, says Frankie Essex

Former TOWIE star Frankie Essex gave birth to her twins, whom she shares with boyfriend Luke Love, in May and has since revealed to the world that they’ve named their little bundles of joy Logan and Luella.

In her exclusive column for OK!, Frankie’s discussed a range of topics in regards to motherhood – from her first social outing with the twins and a blackout at her home when they were just a few days old, to returning to the gym and moving in with cousin Chloe Sims while their family home is being renovated.

This week, Frankie talks about “feeling more human again” as the twins drop their 2am feed, and the mum community she’s found herself to be a part of since the birth of the babies.

Sleep, glorious sleep

The twins have finally dropped their 2am feed. They woke up at like 5:30am this morning as they’re sleeping through now – it’s lovely. That in the middle of the night feed is hard. You just lose your sleep pattern, so it’s nice to have that bit of extra sleep. You know what I mean? When you’re up feeding them, you’re up for a good 45 minutes then it’s hard for us to fall back asleep. I can’t just fall back asleep.

Since getting some more sleep I’m definitely starting to feel a bit more human again. Getting my hair washed and blow-dried on the same day is a good thing, when before I was just letting it dry on its own [because I was so tired]. My hair’s so frizzy and curly and I just didn’t feel like me. It’s nice to get that little bit more sleep so you feel more alive.

Selfcare isn’t just for Sundays

I’ve 100% got that bit of extra time for some selfcare, and that’s so important – especially being a new mum.

Whether it’s getting a nice bath or getting your nails done, you feel a bit more human. I love having my nails done, not that I really go out, but it’s just one thing that I like doing. And having my hair dyed; it just makes you feel better doesn’t it?

To go shopping on my own would be a dream. I used to love going shopping, but at the minute it’s quite hard. It would be unreal. I miss going to Zara on my own and just faffing about.

Twin community

We bumped into a lady the other day at Bluewater [shopping centre, Kent] and she said she has three year old twins, and she was telling us that she still uses her Bugaboo Donkey 5 pram now when she’s out with both of them, so we’ll get good use out of ours! It’s good to hear things like that from other twin mums.

It’s mad how many people are twins. When I was at the doctors with the twins yesterday, one of the nurses said she has twin grandchildren, and another one said that she was a twin. She said she had a twin brother and that they’re really close, so much so he actually lives on the same road as her. It was so nice to hear.

All of a sudden everyone’s a twin! I didn’t realise how many twins there were in the world. I suppose it’s like we’re part of our own little community in a way.

Teething stage…

Things are getting easier, but I think the teething stage is going to be the hardest bit. It’s going to be hard.

Some babies are absolutely fine, but I’ve got a feeling mine won't’ be. Luella isn’t much of a crier, but Logan is. But then, when they had their jabs, Luella was crying more, so I don’t know who it’s going to be. Luella hates medicine, she doesn’t like Calpol, she spits it straight back out, whereas Logan will happily take it. I always thought it would have been the other way round.

Advice for taking babies for their jabs

I always make sure I’ve got a dummy handy for after. The dummies were brilliant. When we were in the hospital, one of the nurses told us to feed the babies while they have it done, but then another lady told me not to. She said not to because when you’re feeding a baby, you’re having a moment with them and, when you’re feeding them and they’re looking at you and they get jabbed, they think it's you who’s hurt them.

So I didn’t do it, I just gave them their dummy. I just started doing my baby voice and trying to make them laugh, which kind of helps them forget about it all. They forget about things so quickly.

Fortunately they’ve been absolutely fine after the jabs. Last time Logan was so ill, but the nurses think that was because of the meningitis jab.
