Jamie Redknapp’s mum Sandra opens up on heartbreaking miscarriage: ‘I cried a lot’

Jamie Redknapp’s mum Sandra has opened up for the first time about suffering a devastating miscarriage.

The former hairdresser, 74, who is 54-years married to football legend Harry, fell pregnant in February 1969, but lost the baby at 12 weeks.

Detailing their heartbreak in joint autobiography When Harry Met Sandra, Sandra bravely told how she had been working at the salon and couldn’t get a bus home to Barking in deepest, darkest winter.

As she walked home in the thick snow, Sandra recalls how she lost feeling in her hands and feet and, feeling very unwell, knew she had suffered a miscarriage.

In an exclusive chat with OK! , Sandra explained why she chose this moment to speak about their loss.

She said: “Harry was away playing football when I had the miscarriage. Not many people know about it. I did think to myself, 'Have I opened up too much?' but if it helps someone that’s all that matters.

“It’s nice to know you’re not alone. Back then nobody talked about it and I don’t think anyone knew how to handle it, especially men. I cried a lot until I fell pregnant again.”

Three months later, former West Ham footballer Harry, 75, and Sandra feel pregnant with their first son Mark, 52.

It had been a difficult pregnancy for Sandra, with her suffering terrible morning sickness throughout – and even during labour.

But once Mark was born on April 16, 1970 Sandra said all those feelings of sickness had disappeared.

Three years later, in June 1973, Jamie arrived to complete their family.

Harry told OK! of their brood: “It was fantastic for me because they both loved sport, they loved football, and as kids they were respectful and polite.”

The couple – who share eight grandchildren – stopped at two children, with Sandra admitting: “If I could have guaranteed having a daughter I would have had a third. We’ve got so many boys in the family as it is!”

Harry and Sandra have become nothing short of relationship icons since his victorious appearance onI’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2018. That three-week stint was the longest they’ve ever been apart, and when they were reunited on-screen, he broke down in tears. Overnight, they becamethe nation’s favourite love story .

In their new joint autobiography, When Harry Met Sandra, they relive their low-key wedding and the horror car crash that left Harry feared dead in Italy in 1990. Sandra, 74, also opens up for the first time about the devastating death of her beloved sister, Pat, mum to former Chelsea starFrank Lampard .
