Film director Jean Luc-Godard known for directing a run of radical, medium-changing films throughout the 1960s, has died at the age of 91. News of the revered filmmaker, who is at the heart of the French New Wave movement, was reported by the French newspaper Liberation.

The cause of the director’s death has not been reported.

Tributes have since poured in for the French-Swiss director as people took to social media and offered their condolences.

Twitter user, @SteveSmith penned: “Love those early films of his, especially Le Mepris, an absolute masterpiece.”
