Kady McDermott says she was replaced by another Love Island star last year

Love Island OG Kady McDermott has revealed she was due to head back to the iconic villa last year, but she was replaced.

Sitting down with Made in Chelsea alum Sam Thompson and TOWIE’s Pete Wicks on their Staying Relevant podcast – dubbed their “weekly quest for fame” – Kady offered insight into her decision making process ahead of her return to the show that first catapulted her into the limelight back in 2016.

The brunette beauty, 27, said: “I originally got asked last year to go back in, instead of Adam Collard but two days before, they called me up, they said, ‘we basically need a bombshell, with how it’s going, we need a boy one, not a girl’.” She added: “So I wasn't massively shocked when they asked me again this year.”

The reality star was hesitant about taking part, even after agreeing to join this summer’s series. She continued: “A part of me was like, ‘I’m not doing it, I’m not doing it’ – I was still 50/50 from the moment I walked into the villa, I was like ‘what am I doing?’ but with me, I don’t want to be like, in 10 years’ time, ‘oh I wish I’d done that’. I’d rather have been like, ‘oh s**t, I did that’.”

Reflecting on her choice further, she said: “I’m 28 this year, I think this is kind of my last time to do it. I was quite honoured, when they called me back, the big dogs of Love Island – they were like, ‘we only want you, we don’t want anyone else, you’re the only girl we’ve asked from all the series’. I thought, ‘that’s kind of cool, why not?’”

Kady confirmed her reentry into the villa was “kind of like a whirlwind”, as she only had four days' notice but ultimately had no regrets.

Podcast co-host Pete didn’t hold back when discussing the rise in people wishing to take part in shows like Love Island, describing a cultural shift and attitude change now there’s been so many reality stars who’ve gone on to fame and fortune.

When discussing Kady’s original run in series two of the smash hit reality dating show, he praised Alex and Olivia Bowen, as well as Kady’s ex, Scott Thomas. In one scathing remark, Pete said: “So basically, they’re like the icon people of Love Island whereas this year, the majority of people, from what I know and what I’ve seen, will be forgotten about in a month or so.”

He added: “Everyone knows who you are from series two whereas this lot, no one will know who they are when the next series comes out.”

Reflecting on her experience and her original co-stars’ naivete about the world of reality television and what it could lead to, Kady said: “Season two, the people were just so different – we all went on there and maybe thought we’d get some free clothes after.”

She added: “I think people from series two and one and three do do so well still because no one expected their life to change from it.”

Recently, she has come to blows with some members of the most recent cast, which she tried to put to bed in a series of Instagram posts. The star said she had "apologised to those" who were upset by her opinions but now feels "deliberately targeted" by some of her "fellow Islanders".

Reiterating her stance to Sam and Pete, the influencer again said she wasn’t just “randomly talking about” her co-stars and was answering questions asked of her on podcasts. She said: “I always answer truthfully… people are getting annoyed because I’m not sitting on the fence,” and continued: “It’s nothing personal, I don’t not like anyone.”

Kady added: “Just because it’s my opinion, doesn’t mean it’s right.”
