Kate Garraway ‘taking control’ by planning night out as she worries about Derek

In a bid to “take control” of her happiness, Kate Garraway has organised various “nights out” with fellow television personalities.

The Good Morning Britain co-anchor has been caring for her husband Derek Draper, 56, since he returned home after over a year in hospital.

The former political advisor contracted Coronavirus in March 2020, and was put into an induced coma a month later.

After spending months in hospital and suffering a series of health complications, Derek now requires full-time care and uses a wheelchair.

In a recent interview, Kate, 56, detailed how she has been trying to “carve out time” for herself whilst juggling her career as a presenter, parent and carer.

Speaking to Best Magazine, the mum-of-two said: “I’ve been experimenting with ways to take control of my own happiness.

“I now deliberately carve out time to give myself the gift of doing something that only helps me.

“It might be only ten minutes of something physical, such as stretching, pottering in the garden with a mug of tea or reading something not related to work.”

As well as practising self-care, the presenter revealed that she has been finding time to make plans with fellow personalities Charlotte Hawkins, Ranvir Singh and Susanna Reid.

“I’ve put some fun girls’ nights in the diary,” she said.

Earlier this month, Kate revealed that her husband had suffered a setback in his journey to recovery after he contracted a “nasty infection”.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, the ITV presenter said: “He’s had a nasty infection this week that set him back a bit but we’re on the right side of it, so that’s good.”

At the Pride of Britain Awards, she told Metro that he was “not doing great to be honest. But the battle goes on”.

She also stated that she had finally been able to secure a meeting with Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Steve Barclay.

The link-up comes after Kate made a plea for the North East Cambridgeshire MP to get in touch with her as she wanted to discuss problems within the health sector.

While on air, the presenter said: “I don’t want to ambush you on air, but I have been trying to contact you and I have been trying to contact [social care minister] Helen Whately as well and I haven’t been able to.

“I have been able to contact your equivalents on the shadow side and I have met with them and talked to them.”

She stated that the conversation wouldn’t be about Derek, but would instead discuss representing, “millions of people across the country who, like me every day, in one hand feel like they are holding the life of their loved one and in the other hand – I don’t want to cry – are just punching and punching away at a system.”
