Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper has been back in hospital for two months, star reveals

Kate Garraway has opened up about her husband Derek's health, revealing that he has been back in hospital for the past two months.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 55, confirmed earlier this week that her husband, 54, has returned to hospital. She's now said he's been there for the past couple of months – and was "in and out" of hospital before that.

Derek has struggled with his health ever since he was admitted to hospital with Covid-19 back in March 2020, where he was put in a medically induced coma as doctors worked hard to help him.

He managed to beat the deadly virus, which has killed 181,000 people so far in the UK, but he was left with a series of health complications including blood clots in his lungs and holes in his heart.

This meant the that Derek had to stay in hospital for more than the year, and is the UK's longest-suffering patient of the virus.

Derek returned home in April 2021, but he still needs constant care as he continues to recover from Covid.

Kate has said she has been taking things "day by day" but admitted she felt "exhausted" after taking Derek back and forth to hospital before his extended stay there.

Speaking to The Sun, Kate said: "He’s been in hospital a couple of months now. He’s been coming in and out.

"Hopefully he’ll come out again. Hopefully tonight. I’m crossing my fingers.

"I’m really tired but I take it day by day to level out the ups and downs."

GMB star Kate has two children with Derek, 16 year old Darcy and Billy, 12, and spoke of her sadness that he missed seeing his daughter attend her prom, which was "emotional and strange" for Kate to see.

Kate ended up having to show Derek photos of Darcey in her prom dress, as well as FaceTiming her on the day.

She added she is trying to "embrace life" for the sake of her husband and her children, but that her children's lives have "changed" since Derek's health declined.

This comes shortly after Kate made a heartfelt plea to Londoners to help find Derek's lost medication after she accidentally left it in a black cab in the capital.

Posting to Twitter, she wrote: "@BC_Lostproperty help!! Have just brought Derek home in a mobility black cab from hospital for a weekend visit.

“I have left a case with all his meds and kit in the front.

“The driver recognised me but may not know it’s there – please look and get in touch – need urgently!!"

Kind fans rushed to offer their help in getting the medication back to her, with one person saying that they knew the cab driver that took Kate and Derek in his car, and they were trying to get in touch with him.

The helpful person tweeted: “I know the driver Kate as he mentioned he'd taken you and your husband to me this evening. I’m trying to get in touch right now.”

Thankfully, Kate finally managed to get Derek's medication back, and she took to Twitter once again on Sunday to tell her followers that she had found the medication and thanked fans for their help.

She wrote: "It’s been returned! Thanks to all who reached out – the message got to driver lovely Robert who has returned it – phew and thanks to all."
