Kate Middleton faced cutting comment from late Queen following wedding gift revamp

Kate Middleton reportedly faced a ‘cutting comment’ from her grandmother-in-law, the late Queen, over her choice of renovation.

The Prince and Princess of Wales were gifted the luxury Anmer Hall country retreat on the Sandringham estate as a wedding present from Her Majesty.

It’s one of the couple's three homes, with Kate and Wills often enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside with Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis at the property.

After being given the home, Kate was reportedly put in charge of the £1.5 million refurbishment of Anmer Hall that was completed in 2015.

And when she invited the Queen round to admire her interior design choices, the monarch apparently made it known that she was not a fan of one modern detail.

The mum-of-three reportedly chose to have an open-plan kitchen fitted at the property, with the Queen making her feelings known.

Royal author and expert Sally Bedell Smith, who wrote the book Elizabeth the Queen, told People Magazine: "I remember when they had just finished renovating Anmer Hall, and they invited the Queen over for lunch.

"They have one of those big kitchens with eating areas, and she said, 'I can't understand why everybody spends their time in the kitchen'."

Royal fans were given a rare glimpse of the couple’s kitchen during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee last year when Kate was pictured baking with her children ahead of a street party.

However, it was not confirmed if the snaps were taken at Anmer Hall or Kensington Palace, the Prince and Princess’ London home.

It comes as it was revealed that William and Kate had a hidden bolthole they'd sneak off to during university days.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are known to escape to the solitude of the Balmoral Estate in Scotland.

The country is a special place for them after they met while both studying at the University of St Andrews.

The family of five now has their own home on the Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire, a three-bedroom cottage called Tam-Na-Ghar.

But according to HELLO!, before it became a family home, the couple would use the cottage as a ‘hidden bolthole’ in the early stages of their relationship.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have since gone on to spend some of their happiest days at the cottage, with a Royal source telling Vanity Fair that the couple enjoy getaways to the cottage with their three children.

The insider explained, "The Queen has a lot of guests coming and to ease the pressure, the [Waleses] are likely to stay at the cottage."
