Katherine Ryan, 39, was met with criticism last month when she shared a picture of herself holding her daughter, Fenna Grace, with a glass of wine next to her. Speaking out about the criticism to Express.co.uk Katherine admitted that it doesn’t upset her and hopes other ladies follow suit and challenge norms.
Express.co.uk asked Katherine if she struggles in the limelight with contrasting opinions, including the example of the recent controversy surrounding her enjoying a glass of wine.
Katherine admitted that she “doesn’t struggle at all” with critics while sharing her thought process on the matter.
She explained: “I don’t struggle at all. I struggle less probably than anyone that I know. Because, I mean, I’ve been fine with criticism since middle school.
“I’m going to be 40 this year and I know that when it comes to mum shaming in particular people are really passionate about parenting and children.
“They’re gonna have an opinion on it, but I think I’m the perfect person to start a discussion about any contentious subject that really doesn’t hurt my feelings.
“And then we get to say, ‘Oh, actually the science says you can have a glass of wine’ and then maybe it might encourage someone to feel less shy about breastfeeding in public or maybe like that they can enjoy a glass of wine with their partner or their girlfriends and feel more balanced as a new mom.
“I just feel like if you’re gonna post something on social media you have to expect a backlash whether it’s drinking while breastfeeding.”
Katherine then touched on the worrying side of social media for “young developing minds”.
She continued: “I think being 40 This year I’m very lucky. I think this is why social media is quite a good tool in many ways, but it’s also a dangerous tool for young developing minds.
“If you’re a teenage young woman and you don’t yet know how to deal with criticism or how seriously to take it, it can be quite difficult.
“It’s probably hurtful and damaging, but I’m very lucky that I grew up without it.”
The TV star hit back at one social media user who criticised her for sharing the Instagram picture that included the glass of wine.
One shot showed the star cuddling her baby daughter as she enjoyed brunch at the plush London hotel Claridge’s, with a glass of wine on the table in front of her.
One social media user commented: “Enough with the wine drinking whilst still breastfeeding.
“I couldn’t care less about statistics about percentages. Alcohol isn’t healthy for adults… never mind babies.”
Katherine was quick to defend herself, replying: “Kera my small children are smart enough to slowly explain to you why it’s fine.”
The comedian also posted a photo the week before of herself feeding Fenna Grace while toasting the camera with a glass of white wine, which again led to critical comments.
One follower wrote: “With all due respect drinking and breastfeeding is the same as drinking while pregnant!”
To which Katherine replied: “With all due respect you’re speaking out of your a**.”
