Former Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh has shared her pride at her fellow bandmate Cheryl ’s West End debut as she took to the stage for the first time in 2:22 A Ghost Story earlier this year.
The 41 year old star revealed that Cheryl’s performance had been nothing short of “brilliant”, with Kimberley even revealing she’d given her close pal some tips prior to treading the boards for the first time at the Lyric Theatre in January.
Speaking for the first time about her sense of pride in watching her friend take to the stage so well, Kimberley told MailOnline that she felt like a “proud mother” watching the singer in action.
“It was so good. I hadn't seen the play before, but I'd sort of been meaning to see it as a few people I knew had obviously been in it already and then Cheryl said she was doing it,” explained Kimberley.
She then continued: “I was like, "Brilliant, now I'm actually going to get to see it." But she was so good. I was literally back there like a proud mother and also kind of shocked that that's her first proper acting role. It's a huge part.”
To the uninitiated who don’t know much about the play, Kimberley explained that many fans may have incorrectly presumed that Cheryl was only playing a small cameo role – but as the singer went on to clarify, it was actually a “massive” part, which really allowed Cheryl to “show off what she's capable of.”
Although the friends are no strangers to the spotlight, having performed at stadiums packed to the brim with fans during their Girls Aloud days, performing on the stage is another world entirely, but one that Cheryl took to like a duck to water, thanks to a few handy tips and pointers from her pal.
Discussing everything from logistics to understanding the tight knit dynamic between crew and cast, Kimberley helped Cheryl to prepare for a gruelling schedule which would see her perform an impressive eight shows a week.
In 2:22 A Ghost Story, Cheryl plays the role of lead character Jenny, a part that was previously played by Love Island host Laura Whitmore.
The play follows the journey of Jenny after she becomes convinced her house is haunted by a supernatural spirit.
Written by Danny Robins, the play was originally published in August 2021, and in the current run, which stars Cheryl, it has been loved by fans and critics alike who couldn’t get enough of the singer’s impressive acting chops.
The Guardian, The Times, What’s On Stage and The Evening Standard all spoke highly of the singer’s presence on stage, with several critics suggesting she could even take her stage career further in the future.
