Linda Nolan has revealed that she was “shocked and scared” after being told by her doctor that her cancer has spread to her brain. The 64-year-old member of Anglo-Irish pop group The Nolans has been using a wheelchair after having trouble with her balance. She is moving in with sister Denise as she battles the disease for the fourth time. In 2020 she revealed a third recurrence, in her liver, after treatment for breast cancer.
Linda said: “Unfortunately, sadly for me, my cancer has now spread to my brain. That’s obviously very frightening because there isn’t much out there for brain cancer at the moment, apart from radiotherapy, which I’m going to be having.
“But there is a new drug that’s been in use for a year, for brain cancer, and they’re going to try me on that as a [chemotherapy] drug with some other treatment.
“I’ve always been honest and I just wanted people to know my situation.”
The singer went on to say that she is “not giving up” and is remaining “positive” about the future.
Linda, who shot to fame with her sisters in 1979 with I’m In The Mood For Dancing, added: “I’m [going to] lose my hair again for the fourth time. So my sister said, ‘At least you’ve got some nice wigs out of it’.”
The 2014 Celebrity Big Brother contestant then told Good Morning Britain how she was preparing for the months ahead.
She said: “We’re getting everything and [I’ve] bought a wheelchair, we’re getting stuff ready for the inevitable.
“Really scary, scary trip to be on, this one.” Linda, who has also been a guest panellist on Loose Women, said she thought there was an issue with her spine before she was told about the latest diagnosis.
“So it was a shock in that effect because… you immediately think… [it is] the start of a long and winding road, but the hope is that there is this new drug, they’re hailing it as a wonder drug.
“The hope is that it will do wonders for me, please god.
“I can’t walk a long way at the moment so if I want to go out for some fresh air, I need a wheelchair.
“It’s [about] being practical and owning up that I have got this horrible disease. I don’t know how long I’ve got left and that’s not me being morbid – I don’t know, none of us know really.”
Her sister Anne, who starred with Linda on TV’s The Nolans Go Cruising, was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago.
It was Anne’s second battle with the disease but she is now cancer-free. Their sibling Bernie died from breast cancer in 2013 at the age of 52.
Linda said the family history of cancer has also been “really scary” for her other sisters Denise, Maureen and Coleen. She admitted she sometimes becomes emotional and “thinks, ‘Why me?’”.
Photos at the weekend showed Linda using a wheelchair, weeks after she celebrated her 64th birthday, being pushed along by Maureen.
At the time a family source commented: “Linda has been prone to falls before but usually it’s a common side-effect of the chemotherapy she was on.”
They added: “However she hasn’t been on it for quite a while and the falls were becoming more regular and more dangerous.
“She had a series of falls a couple of weeks ago, just after her birthday. The family are extremely worried right now and are rallying around to support and care for her.
“Linda doesn’t feel safe in her home alone right now.
“Everyone’s hoping for the best but preparing for the worst.”
Linda refused to let her health problems slow her down or hamper her brilliant late-night birthday party where she was all smiles, enjoying a pink birthday cake and a boozy family dinner.
Her event went viral on social media platform TikTok, as she was seen dancing to the Nolans’ hits Attention To Me and Chemistry in a Blackpool nightclub at 3am.
